Grant Project Summary:
California Department of Fish
and Game
GIS and Analytical Tool Development Support for CalFish, a Web-based Data
Storage, Management, and Retrieval System for California
July 2004 to June 2005
Project Summary
The California Department of Fish and Game is developing a centralized California
fisheries data storage, management, and retrieval system called CalFish. The
system builds on and extends the capabilities of StreamNet and delivers a
wide variety of fisheries data and information to researchers and managers
working with California coastal salmonids. CalFish is using Internet Map Server
technology to map and provide on-line analysis of data from multiple agencies.
Current CalFish cooperators include the following groups: 1) California Department
of Fish and Game; 2) California Department of Water Resources; 3) California
Department of Transportation; 4) The Coastal Conservancy; 5) Pacific States
Marine Fisheries Commission; 6) NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service; and
7) the California Resources Agency Legacy Program. CalFish program guidance
rests primarily with the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission and the
California Department of Fish and Game; however, the overall impetus and force
behind the program is the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission.
NOAA Coastal Services Center's Role
The California Department of Fish and Game and the NOAA Coastal Services Center
entered into a cooperative agreement to develop a centralized California fisheries
data storage, management, and retrieval system called CalFish. The Center is
working closely with the California Department of Fish and Game and the Pacific
States Marine Fisheries Commission to develop tools previously identified as high
priority through consultation with fisheries employees in CalFish partner agencies.
Grantee Overview
The mission of the California Department
of Fish and Game, headquartered in
Sacramento, is to manage California's diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources,
and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and for
their use and enjoyment by the public. The Department of Fish and Game, a department
of the California Resources Agency, maintains native fish, wildlife, plant
species, and natural communities for their intrinsic and ecological value and
for their benefits to people. This work includes habitat protection and maintenance
in a sufficient amount and quality to ensure the survival of all species and
natural communities. The department is also responsible for the diversified
use of fish and wildlife, including recreational, commercial, scientific, and
educational uses.
