Summary
UNEP/GRID Documentation Summary for Data Set: Distribution of 10 Endangered Animal Species of Africa The ten maps of Endangered Animal Species distributions in Africa were provided by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) - World Conservation Monitoring Center (WCMC) to UNEP/GRID-Geneva for digitization into ... computer form in 1986. The ten maps were digitized in ARC/INFO on a Prime computer system, and subsequently transferred to a Perkin-Elmer machine and rasterized to a two-minute cell size in the ELAS software format. Today, the same data files reside at GRID on an IBM mainframe computer, but they have never been updated. Each of the ten data files shows the distribution (i.e., presence/absence) of a particular animal species for the whole of Africa. The Latin and common names of the ten species digitized are shown below. Species Name Common Name Location Status* ____________ ___________ ________ _______ Ciconia Ciconia White Stork? Orycteropus Afer ? Panthera Leo African Lion (?) Balaeniceps Rex Shoebill C. & E. Africa K Ceropithecus Diana Diana Monkey West Africa V Cercocebus Galeritus Tana R. Mangabey Kenya E Lemur Mongoz Mongoose Lemur Comoros and E Lemur Catta Ring-Tailed Lemur Madagascar V Gyps Coprotheres Cape Vulture Southern Africa R Chrysocholris Asiatic Golden Mole? South Africa? I The source of these data files is the Protected Areas Data Unit (PADU) of WCMC-IUCN in Cambridge, U.K. as digitized by GRID-Geneva. There is no reference available for the original maps themselves, although one may refer to the 1986 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, prepared by the IUCN Conservation Monitoring Center in a volume of 105 pages. Each of the ten Endangered Animal Species distribution data files has a spatial resolution of two minutes (120 seconds) of latitude/longitude, or approximately 3.7 kilometers. The data files consist of 2191 rows (lines, records) by 2161 columns (elements, pixels, samples) each. Their common origin (upper-left or northwest corner) is 38 degrees, 0 minutes and 45 seconds North latitude (38 d 00' 45" N), and -20 degrees, 1 minutes and 15 seconds West longitude (-20 d 01' 15" W); and they extend to -35 degrees, 1 minutes and 15 seconds South latitude (-35 d 01' 15" S), and 52 degrees, 0 minutes and 45 seconds East longitude (52 d 00' 45" E) at their terminal point (lower-right or southeast corner). Each data file comprises 4.74 Megabytes. * - Status according to the 1986 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals; where "Ex" = Extinct; "E" = Endangered; "V" = Vulnerable; "R" = Rare; "I" = Indeterminate; "K" = Insufficiently known; "T" = Threatened and "CT" = Commercially threatened.
