(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) joined the Senate in approving a bipartisan economic stimulus bill to help revive the nation’s faltering economy.

“The Senate stimulus package we approved today is the shot in the arm our economy needs,” Senator Murray said.  “Millions of Americans are at risk of losing their homes and their jobs, and they are struggling to pay their bills.  This package is temporary, targeted, and timely.  It will get our economy moving, and help families begin to feel strong again.”  

The Senate bill was approved 81-16.  It improves on a plan negotiated in the House by providing economic relief for working families, 20 million seniors, and 250,000 disabled veterans.  To ensure that rebate checks go to the people who need them most, the bill caps benefits at $75,000 for single taxpayers and $150,000 for joint returns. 

Murray added that while the stimulus bill is a good first start, she also is looking forward to working through the year on further steps to strengthen the economy for the long-term.

“The Senate was able to take a good package from the House and make it even better,” Senator Murray said.  “But there’s still a lot more we can do.  I’m going to keep fighting to build on today’s success and help more Americans hurting in the Bush economy.”
