SOHO Daily Meeting Notes for 06 May 1996/DoY 127 - Meeting chaired by Laura Allen. Notes by Julia Saba/MDI Announcements: ------------- - Eliane Larduinat got her hair cut. [It looks very nice as well as very different, but we still recognize her.] - There was no daily briefing yesterday (Sunday). FOT report (Rich Kavanaugh): ---------- - Spacecraft is nominal. - On Doy 126, at 0215 UT, the POCC crashed; String 2 failed over to String 1. - There was an ACU telecommand uplink error during the roll steering law; it was uploaded again afterwards with no problem. - No change to the DSN schedule. Today's Schedule: ---------------- - Morning contact ended at 14:15 UT (during this meeting). - Next contact starts at 18:31 UT (2:31 pm EDT). NRT at about 19:30 UT until 0310. - EIT high rate telemtry (submode 2) as planned, ~20:30-21:00 UT. Short pauses in NRT link on either side. Instrument status: ----------------- MDI: nominal. Ran in structure/dynamics mode all weekend. Flat field upload complete. SUMER: instrument was very busy over the weekend. Observations include: continuation of forbidden line study, chromospheric oscillation study, hydromagnetic wave study, reference spectrum of active region above east limb, south coronal hole study, support of JOP 28. CDS: NIS nominal. Still not able to use GIS. Observed south polar coronal hole; mapping active region on east limb in hot lines. Studying emerging active region on disk. LASCO: nominal. Small problem over weekend with polarization sequence; a cure would require a reboot. Rather than take the time during the comet passage, the polarization sequence was cut out of the comet observations. The comet head passed out of the field of view yesterday pm; the tail will be in the field a bit longer. Haven't yet looked at the images from yesterday. Will construct a 5-6 day movie of the comet. EIT: nominal. In addition to normal synoptic mode, will be running in high-rate telemetry submode for half an hour today at about 20:30. Would like to run 284-A sequence to get images of light leak in clear position. Observed active region at east limb. The new region on the disk popped up between 0900 UT (not visible) and 1500 UT (developed). Now approaching central meridian. UVCS: nominal. Supported JOP 28 Saturday; sequence ran correctly. Yesterday ran normal synoptic program and observed south polar coronal hole. Making line profiles. SWAN: [comment by Eliane]: showed red limits Friday. Now OK, after detector turned off and back on. JOPs and collaborations: ----------------------- - LASCO and SWAN ending comet observations. - Intercal 001, scheduled for tomorrow, will be postponed -- tentatively rescheduled for next Wednesday. CDS still not able to use GIS, and EIT participation tomorrow would be limited. - Intercal 002 still currently scheduled for Wednesday. - JOP 015 tomorrow. SUMER and CDS will run JOP 15 sequence from about 18:30 to 23:20, beginning about an hour before the contact starts. MDI participation is requested for 90 minutes starting at 20:30; this is an hour earlier than scheduled. Target area will be worked out offline. Solar status: ------------ - MDI FD magnetogram from ~0600 UT shows new active region on the disk. More FD mags came in just before the meeting began -- not yet examined. - EIT 304-A image shows "keyhole" near south polar crown filament. Joe Gurman notes that the region betwen the polar crown filament and the coronal hole has looked "fluffy" for the last couple of days, a lot puffier and denser than usual. Does this mean it is more active? - Yohkoh SXT images showed almost complete circle of arcade of loops in new active region, described by J. Gurman as looking like a "wire lemon squeezer."
