Singing the Telegraph

I Just Received a Telegram from Baby, (1899)
Words: Will A. Heelen Music: Harry Von Tilzer
Lyrics:
A guy sat in a lonely cell, he couldn't sit outside
Until he paid his little fine, to raise it he had tried.
He'd been out with a vaudeville show, got mixed up in a fight,
And telegraphed his baby for some coin on Saturday night.
On Sunday and Monday that fellow had the blues,
'Twould double his trouble if baby should refuse;
But the next day just at noontime, he was singing songs in ragtime,
And he said, "I've got more money now than I know how to use."

CHORUS
"For I've just received a telegram from Baby,
An answer to the one she got from me.
I found she was a most obliging lady,
Just as I expected her to be.
I knew my baby wouldn't disappoint me,
I never gave her cause to turn me down.
She wired me on a twenty, and I guess that will be plenty.
For to take me back to town.
She wired me on a twenty, and I guess that will be plenty.
For to take me back to town."
