Title: HSI model development for Hill AFB, Utah

Highlights and Key Findings: This work continues to progress ahead of schedule. We have completed the HSI models and are beginning to develop model testing plans for this coming Spring 2003.
Objectives: Wildlife and Terrestrial Resources - Develop tools such as predictive models, decision support, and expert systems for science-based management of wildlife and plant populations and their habitats. The objectives of the work are: 1. Develop Habitat Suitability Index models for Sage Sparrow, Burrowing Owl, and Long-Billed Curlew. 2. Perform field tests of the above models. 3. Develop a predictive model, using classification/regression trees, to predict presence of Giant Four-Winged Saltbush, an endangered species.
Statement of Problem: The Hill AFB, Environmental Branch is attempting to develop habitat maps for the entire base for purposes of guiding future land use on the base. Their principal interest is guiding the future establishment of bombing ranges away from the most valuable habitats for key species.
2003 Progress: Completed and delivered to client three HSI models and a predictive model for four-winged salt bush. Conducted a two day training workshop in Ft Collins for client. Developed plans to field test models and develop implement the models in GIS.
2003 Statement of Work: The objectives of the work are: 1. Develop Habitat Suitability Index models for Sage Sparrow, Burrowing Owl, and Long-Billed Curlew. 2. Perform field tests of the above models. 3. Develop a predictive model, using classification/regression trees, to predict presence of Giant Four-Winged Saltbush, an endangered species.
2004 Progress: Provided a 3-day training course for clients. The course was focused on the use of models and software developed during the course of the study. This training course was the last deliverable and hence effectively terminates the project.
2004 Statement of Work: The objectives of the work are: 1. Evaluate Habitat Suitability Index models for Sage Sparrow, Burrowing Owl, and Long-Billed Curlew. 2. Develop cartographic versions of the HSI models 3. Assist with integration and application of the HSI models to environmental decisions on Hill AFB.
