"Making a great circle in the sky, the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, were clearly visible over Hartford Sunday night. Gossamer streamers of light slanted downward from the skies to present the picture of a ragged white cone. In magnitude the display was said to be one of the greatest visible to Hartford residents in recent years. Although the peak could not be clearly defined in its entire circumstance, the sweep of light from three-fourths of it was of exceptional brilliance." 1930 5 4 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1930 5 4 BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS [monthly summary only] 1930 5 4 CONCORD NEW HAMPSHIRE [monthly summary only] 1930 5 4 PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND Commenting on the aurora of May 4th, the Providence Journal said, "The sky lighted up in the north shortly before 10.00 O'clock (daylight time), and in addition to beams of light which extended nearly to the meridian, the sky was swept by the rapidly moving bands usually described as "merry dancers". Descriptions as follows: Sept. 7-8, 1932. Aurora was first observed by writer while away from station about 11.15 p.m. None was seen at the regular 8 p.m. observation. On returning to station at 11.30 p.m., the aurora was found to consist of a well-defined homogeneous arc (HA), azimuth from about 104 to about 275, and passing overhead near the zenith. The band of whitish light was about 2 degrees in width and quite uniform. Near the horizon, from about azimuth 124 to 240, there was a feeble glow (G), maximum elevation near center about 16 degrees. The homogeneous arc disappeared quite rapidly just before midnight. The feeble glow continued and was observed at 2.00 a.m. The boundaries were not well-defined, but theodolite readings taken gave the azimuth from about 144 to about 219, with maximum elevation near center from 12 to 14 degrees. The glow was of pale whitish light. Clouds at the time of observation were few STCU. 1932 9 18 EASTPORT MAINE Auroral display observed from 8.10 p.m. to 9.15 p.m. Display consisted of occasional streamers appearing and disappearing in due North, reaching a maximum height of 25 degrees. The western limit was not as distinct as the eastern. Later the form changed to that of horizontally undulated curtains or draperies, whose movement seemed to be from east to wet and which at times showed red to green colors from bottom to top respectively. Throughout the maximum of the display; streamers appeared and at the height seemed to emanate from the whole length of the arc or curtain and converge at the zenith. Pale and ill-defined flashes appeared in indistinct waves from the main formation to the zenith. After 9:30 p.m. the aurora settled to a more or less steady glow and finally faded. 1935 4 11 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 4 19 CONCORD NEW HAMPSHIRE [monthly summary only] 1935 4 29 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 4 30 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 5 1 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 5 1 BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS [monthly summary only 1935 5 1 BURLINGTON VERMONT Aurora observed at 9:30 p.m. on 1st; continued to about 2:00 a.m. May 2nd. 1935 5 2 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 5 18 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 5 19 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 5 20 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 5 21 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 5 24 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 5 25 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 6 28 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 6 29 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 6 30 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 7 24 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 7 25 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 7 26 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 8 4 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 8 5 PORTLAND MAINE [monthly summary only] 1935 8 24 BURLINGTON VERMONT An aurora was observed during the night of the 24th to 25th. It was observed at the Weather Observatory from 6:15 p.m.to 7:30 p.m. when only a pale greenish glow remained in the north. The main beauty appeared in the northwestern sky out of which shot brilliant reddish streamers terminating at the zenith and fading only to return in fairly rapid succession to the admiration and awe manifested by the people of the Island. Smaller shafts of light of varied hue seemed to bespeckle the sky from all directions and form a crown at the zenith. To the north the display appeared less brilliant, only a dull greenish hue being visible at that point. No arch was observed at any time. Short wave radio sets were interfered with and the teletype system at the local office of the Western Union was started up by the phenomenon. 1938 1 25 PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND An extremely vivid aurora began soon after sunset and continued till 7:45 p.m. The most brilliant period lasted from 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Great arches of crimson light rose in the east and followed almost exactly the plane of the ecliptic to the west. A very intense red was visible at the eastern and western ends of the arch. The colors in the display were as bright as a neon sign. At 7:00 p.m. it extended from a point in the southwest entirely around the northern horizon to a point just south of east and nearly as high as the bright star Sirius. Astronomers in New England said the lights differed from previous auroral displays with such intensity and color and direction of the beams. The immense arches of crimson light with shifting areas of green and blue, radiated from a brilliant Auroral Crown near the zenith instead of appearing as usual in parallel lines. It was the most brilliant display seen in Rhode Island since March 22, 1920. [another report:] In the eastern United States, as well as on the North Atlantic Ocean, the predominant color was a pinkish to dull red, but often with light beams cast against the ruddy background. At Providence, R.I., the aurora was extremely vivid from sunset until 7:45 p.m., with great arches of crimson light and radiations from an auroral crown near the zenith. Here it was noted as being the most brilliant display seince March 22, 1920.
