P O S T P O N E D Seminar: "Maximum likelihood and other new approaches to cryo-EM structures of membrane proteins" Speaker: Fred Sigworth Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology Yale University School of Medicine Date: NOT: 9/27/00 Time: 9:00 am Place: Building 6, Room 407 Abstract: Fred will discuss his ideas on using maximum-likelihood (ML) techniques to enhance the three-dimensional reconstruction of objects from cryo-electron micrographs. A 3D reconstruction can be calculated after the view orientation and translational position of each imaged particle is determined. Cryo-EM images of biological macromolecules are noisy, and hence it is difficult to determine accurate orientations and translational parameters of the imaged particles. The ML technique that Fred has developed is less sensitive to noise than, for example, cross-correlation techniques.
