Yahoo! is the world’s largest global online network of integrated services and is one of the most trafficked Internet destinations. Yahoo! has invested in alternative energy sources in a variety of its offices. At our Santa Clara location, we have purchased up to one-half of the annual output of one large-scale wind turbine, or 1,608 megawatt-hours (MWh), preventing the emission of over 641 tons of carbon dioxide annually. The environmental benefit of a purchase this size is equivalent to planting 534 acres of trees or removing 139 cars from the road per year. The clean renewable energy is derived from new wind and solar generation sources in California. We also power some of our offices and data centers in the Pacific Northwest with renewable energy, such as hydroelectric. Yahoo! is committed to not only inspiring its 500 million monthly worldwide visitors to take action against climate change, but also to ensuring that it minimizes its own environmental impacts. Committed to becoming carbon neutral in 2007, Yahoo! focuses on ways to create energy efficiencies at its facilities, motivate employees to reduce their personal impacts, as well as create products and services that encourage consumers to incorporate sustainability into their lifestyles (Yahoo! Autos Green Center, Yahoo! Green, 18Seconds.org). A level of excitement at Yahoo generates from the knowledge that we are committed to environmental causes and doing something about it. “In order to encourage our users to take action, we need our own house to be in order. Our green power commitment is one of the many programs we've undertaken to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability," said Chris Page, Director, Climate and Energy Strategy.
