Accomplishments

First dynamically-bent sagittally- focusing
x-ray monochromator

  • Pioneered the use of graphite spectrometers, and dynamically bent sagittal focusing optics (IR-100 award and Patent).
  • Discovered the x-ray resonant Raman and the resonant Auger effects.
  • Designed beamlines X14A at the NSLS and 33-ID and 33-BM at the APS.
  • Pioneered the use of anomalous x-ray scattering to determine local structure in crystalline solid solution alloys.
  • Pioneered the use of anomalous x-ray scattering to determine the structure and chemical state of buried interfaces.
  • Demonstration of resonant magnetic scattering to study magnetic phase transitions.
  • Demonstrated that precision inelastic x-ray scattering measurements can be used to study band structure of materials.
  • First successful multiple wavelength x-ray holography measurement.
  • Measured colony orientation of high Tc superconducting tapes for development of high current density.
