- Discovered the x-ray resonant Raman and the resonant Auger effects.
- Designed beamlines X14A at the NSLS and 33-ID and 33-BM at the APS.
- Pioneered the use of anomalous x-ray scattering to determine local structure in crystalline solid solution alloys.
- Pioneered the use of anomalous x-ray scattering to determine the structure and chemical state of buried interfaces.
- Demonstration of resonant magnetic scattering to study magnetic phase transitions.
- Demonstrated that precision inelastic x-ray scattering measurements can be used to study band structure of materials.
- First successful multiple wavelength x-ray holography measurement.
- Measured colony orientation of high Tc superconducting tapes for development of high current density.
