AP: Study the ecological, bionomical, taxonomical, and faunal characteristics of beneficial and pest species of vegetable crops. Develop control strategies based on these factors, with emphasis on conservation and augmentation, foreign exploration, and integrated control. PR: 6301 TO 8806 During the 25-year life of the project, studies were conducted on arthropod pests associated with the principal vegetable crops grown in southern California, with emphasis on biological control of the potato tuberworm on potato, tomato pinworm on tomato, two-spotted spider mite on strawberry, and Amorbia cuneana and omnivorous looper on avocado. Biological control of the latter three pests was highly successful, and is used commonly by strawberry and avocado growers statewide. Integrated control programs were developed successfully for tomato and cole crops, using mass releases of Trichogramma and applications of Bacillus thuringiensis for "key" pest species. These results were incorporated in IPM manuals for the two crops. The biologies of most exotic and indigenous hymenopterous parasites of the potato tuberworm and tomato pinworm were studied. Additionally, biosystematic studies of Trichogramma, parasitizing eggs of lepidopterous pests, were conducted. Altogether, 126 publications were published on results obtained from the project research. PB: 6301 TO 8806 HOHMANN, C. L., LUCK, R. F., and OATMAN, E. R. (1988).
