Subject: BU POLAR code version 3.20

CCR Team,

Due to important bug fixes, I am releasing a new version 3.20
of POLAR code, found at leadbelly and BU. The Aerospace code,
vs. 2.02 Get_Cep_Data, was changed from vs 2.01 and became
incompatible with our 3.0 POLAR code. The fix involves a
third include file "l1common.inc" which must be downloaded
for compilation. Look at the REAME files.

A second bug caused PostScript to be > 1 MByte and generally
unprintable, due to a misdimensioned color bar. That has been fixed so
that PS files are generally under a MByte now.

New features include the superposition of B-field direction on
Sector/Roll plots. The 90 degree pitchangle is shown as a line,
the 60 degree pitchangle appears as a dotted line. There are
some arbitrary offsets needed to get the data and the B-field
lined up.

One can also request a black or a white background for the
color tables. While this works for GIF files, it doesn't
work for .PS files, which have a "white" background for
all but contour plots.

Printing to a file is now included in the plotting menu option,
"10...Output device", where choosing "FILE" will create an
ASCII file. This and the above features means that the batch file
"daily.pro" needs slight modification to run with vs 3.20

Future updates will include:
- warping time to L-shell for Baker movies
- adding CAMMICE MICS and HIT data products

CCR Team,

I am pleased to announce release 3.0 of the BU POLAR
CEPPAD plotting package. Many of you have made useful
comments about ways to improve the software. I am happy
to report that we have added all 9 of Michael Henderson's
requests, excepting the PAPCO interface... So now the
plots are nearly pretty enough to publish (though not
accurate, I'm waiting on definitive calibration numbers.)
The widget interface has gone through one iteration of
user testing, I think you will find it even easier to use
than before. There's even a button for automatically
mailing BU your bug reports.
The *really* important upgrade is that it now uses version
2.03/2.01 Aerospace writer/reader software, which includes
important things such as Magnetic fields, HIST singles,
temperatures... So there are more things to plot than
ever before.
The software can be accessed by anonymous FTP to
uss-enterprise, where it is kept in the /rsheldon/idl/
folder. Or use the "FTP" button from the WWW page
located at http://buspace.bu.edu/EPG/rsheldon/
I will load it on leadbelly when I get the opportunity
as well. Look in the BU folder.

Future updates will include:
- warping time to L-shell for Baker movies
- superposing the 90 deg pitchangle line on the sector plots
- adding CAMMICE MICS and HIT data products

CCR Team,
The BU software for producing plots now has a widget
interface. A few bugs are still there, which we would
like to hear about. For those who prefer a mouse
based interface, it has the same functionality as the
menu interface. To run the widget interface, you must
have X-windows operating, and type "-2" at the main
menu.
Additional features are displays in either Counts,
dJ/dE or phase-space-density-f. Documentation is in
the "polar.hlp" file and the "README". Note that some
of the include files have been modified in version 2.0,
so you will need to get the latest versions of those
to compile the program.
Michael Henderson reports that he has version 1.01
working at leadbelly and generating from the CD-ROMs
the same plots seen at
http://buspace.bu.edu/EPG/rsheldon/
now at LANL. And Michael Redding was able to link 1.00
with Aerospace 2.03 code and generate plots at Aerospace
on an AlphaVAX.
Version 2.01 is in the works to warp the time-axis so
that L-shells are linear. This will allow inter-comparison
of orbits, and possibly movies.

Dear CCR Team, May 7, 1996

After the CEPPAD meeting last month, Dan Mabry uploaded a new
Telemetry table to the spacecraft which affects mostly IES, but
is incompatible with earlier versions of Polar.pro. This new
table is incorporated into the Polar 0.99 final beta version that
can be found at the anonymous ftp site on
uss-enterprise.bu.edu
in directory
/rsheldon/idl
Of course, if you have a WWW link to the page at:
http://buspace.bu.edu/EPG/rsheldon/
there is a pointer to the above FTP site. The README file has
up-to-date documentation on the program. Note that this
update affects the "make_level_1.pro" routines as well.

Using this 0.99 release, nearly all the previous days have been
reprocessed in a slightly different format, which includes
the L-shell. Look through the images on the web site above.
And check out the POLAR movie at AGU.

GO POLAR!
rob
