(Inside) Would you like to be on a team dedicated to helping first responders in a The District of Columbia's Commission on National and Community Service is offering a special training to its residents to advance emergency preparedness and increase citizen involvement in community response. The program Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), utilizes the expertise of The George Washington University Medical Center in training citizens to prepare for all kinds of emergencies and to aid local emergency services in the event of a disaster in their community. CERT members will be trained and certified in disaster preparedness, fire suppression, emergency medical operations, search and rescue techniques, and response to terror attacks. The CERT program is a part of the District of Columbia Citizen Corps effort to empower citizens in preparedness and response. Learn what to expect in the event of a major disaster. Become trained in necessary life-saving and decision-making skills in order to decrease injury and mortality. Help organize teams of citizens who will offer help until professional life support services arrive. CERT will empower citizens with skills and information. They will learn what measures to take before, during and after a disaster as well as discuss what safety measures to take to help family members and neighbors. CERT will teach fire chemistry, hazardous materials, fire hazards and fire suppression, with a strong emphasis on the safe use of fire extinguishers, and how to size up a situation and control utilities. CERT will provide information on diagnosing and managing airway obstruction, bleeding and shock using triage and rapid treatment techniques. CERT will empower citizens to conduct head-to-toe patient assessment, perform basic first aid and establish a medical treatment area. CERT participants win learn about search and rescue planning, size-ups, search techniques, recue techniques and rescuer safety. CERT participants will review the signs and some of the emotional symptoms experienced by disaster workers. CERT will train citizens in what to expect in the event of a terror attack, some common terrorist threats and agents and how best to handle a terror situation. NOTE: 20 students will be selected from those who have completed CERT training to become CERT instructors.
