CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA FOR APRIL, 1912. DISTRICT No. 2, SOUTH ATLANTIC AND EAST GULF STATES. CHARLES F. YON HBBRYANN, Dislzict Editor. GENERAL SUMMARY. The cloudy! rain enerally disagreeable weather that tinued to prevail during most of April, especially in the southern portions of the distrkt, but the month was not cold. Over hundreds of s uare miles of territory in southern G e w a , northern jlorida, and in Alabama and Mississippi the rninfell for the inonth ww unusually heavy, causing destruct, ive floods and a t several places keeping the rrvers above flood stages d u r i v the entire month. At Demopolis, on the lower Tombigbee River, the mean staee of the river for April was 53.9 feet, the flood stage being but 35 feet, n record unsurpassed during the past 80 years. However, over most of central and southern Florida, the Carolinas, and Virginia the rctinfall was moderate, pnd in Virginia there was even a c.onsider- able deficiency, so that conditions in the northern lortion door occupations. The temperature was very uniform during the month and wns moderately above norninl in practicdlfV all portions of the district. This excess resulted rom.the absence of cool s ells of more than a has charactenzed t !tg e early months of the gear 1913 con- of the district were more pleasant, and favorable I or out- couple of cia s' duration, the genera !l doudiness prevent- ing very hig { day temperatures. Frosts were much less fre iient and injurious than is usual in April. Tihe fluctuations of iitmosplieric pressure were veiy considcrable during the month, about S areas of high pressure and an equal number of low pressure areas hav- ing had an immsdiate influeme on the weather in the dis- trict. The highest pressure generdly occurred on the 4th or 5th in the southern portion of the district,, but on t.he 36th in the northern part, with a maximum of 30.59 inches at Norfolk, Va. The lowest ressures for the month occurred in connection wit,h &sturbanc.es that moved from Texas to near the northern border of the district on the 2d and 17th, the minimum being 39.33 inches at Richmond, Va. The month of April was generally quite warm, and in Florida and Georgia since 1S92 it has been sur assed only two very brief eriods of cool weat.her during which the month fluctuated but slightly, the general cloudi- but as a rule the temperatures during most ness preventing marked daily ranges until near the close of the month. The temperature was above normal in all sections, though Pensacola, Fla., reported just normal. The excess for the month reached about 5' on the south- eastern coast of Florida and on the coasts of North Caro- lina and Virginia, thence diminishing slowly toward the west. The average temperature for the entire district was 64.9', or 2.6' above normal, and the State means ranged from 59.2' for the Virginia area to 72.8' for Flor- ida. Monthly means above 70' a t individual stations occurred on1 in Florida and the adjoining portions of remainin portions of the district etween 60" and 70°, North Carolina and western Virginia. The highest monthly mean was 792' at Eey West, Fla., and the lowest 51.1' a t Hot Springs, Va., the two stations that mark the extreme southern and northern limits of the district. The month o ened uite W R ~, but a marked decline were generally the coldest days throughout the district. During this eriod minimum temperatures below freezing occurred we P 1 into the tidewater region of Virginia, in central and northern North Carolina m d in extreme northern Georgia, with a minimum for the district of 19' on the 4th a t Hot Springs, Va. On account of the very backward state of vegetation killing frosts on these dates did very little damage. The weather was also cool on various dates from the 7th to loth, with light frosts, and light frosts formed later in the month but were quite harmless. During most of the month the temperature was uniformly moderately above normal, with the warmest weather from the 11th to 17th and 25th to 30th. The highest temperatures were near 90' over most of the district, rising to 96' in Florida, and occurred on various dates, mainly the 12th, 15th, and 27th to 30th. % Georgia, w h e 4 as a rule they ran ed over most of the falling be 7 ow 60' a t a comparatively few points in western in temperature P 8 ollowe immediately and the 3d and 4th PRECIPITATION. The most striking feature with reference to the tlis- tiibution of rainfall is the remarkably large amounts that were received in southwestern Georgia and the adjacent. portions of Florida, in central and western Alabama, and in the eastern portion of the hfississippi area, where the total amounts for April ranged from 10 to 30 inches at no less than 60 stations. Such heavy rains are almost unprecedented in April, and at several stations i t was the wettest April since the establishment of the stations in 1871 or 1872. The State average for the Mississippi area is 11.35 inches; for Alabama, 10.28, and for Georgia, 7.31 inches, and the res ective departures + 6.94, + 6.32, was destructive to soil and crops; they kept the rivers extremely high, with consequent flooding of immense and +3.66 inches. In these States there was ample sunshine, the rains were beneficial, and although vegeta- tion was checked in growth during the first decade, the month aa a whole waa favorable for outdoor occupations, for preparation of the soil and planting, and for the growth of vegetation. Scattered and generally light showers fell from the 1st to 3d, and 7th to 8th in most sections, the weather then remaining fair until the 10th in Alabama and Mississippi, and to the 13th in other portions of the district. A long eriod of frequent and often excessive rains then followed, fasting until the 23d, and showers again fell from the 26th to 30th. The heaviest local rains occurred on the 12th-l3th, 15th-l7th, and 20th-21st, with maximum amounts of 4 inches or more in 24 hours at a large num- ber of stations. In Mississi pi the maximum 24-hourly in Alabama, 5.10 inches at Daphne on the 17th. At Montgomery, Ala., 8.46 inches fell from the 14th to the 17th, and 5.30 inches more from the 20th to 22d, inclu- sive. In Georgia the maximum amount was 5.30 inches at Bainbridge on the 20th-21st1 and on the same day 9.50 inches re11 at Blountst, own, Fla. The avera e rainfall for the entire district was 6.26 of rain fell in central-southern Florida, where 5 stations received less than 1 inch, with the minimum 0.20 inch at Fort Myers, Fla. rainfall. was 5.60 inches at E eaksville on the 20th-21st; inches, and t Fl e departure + 2.77. The smallest amounts MISCELLANEOUS PHENOMENA. The prevailing winds for the month were from tho southwest in the States from Georgia northwnrd to Vir- ginia, from the east in Florida, and from the south in Alabama and Mississippi. The wind rnovenient was considerable, and hi$ winds and severe local storms were frequent durinc. the month. The average hourly velocity exceeded 10 maes a t all the coast sttitions and at Atlanta, Ga. The highest velocities reported were: C'harleston, S. C., 67 miles from the southenst on the 20th; Savannah, Ga., 53 miles west on the 23d; Hatteras, N. C., GO miles, south on the 23d; and Pensacola, Fla., 56 miles south on the 17th. Telephone and tdegraph wires were blown down, many trees uprooted, and several small houses unroofed South CaroZina.-St. George and Aiken: Severe windstorm occurred at these places on the 22d, injuring anumber of people and killing two. ported : Charleston (Mr. J. H. Scott, local forecaster): A local storm of eat severity and suddenness occurred at Charleston about 5 m. on f p r i l 20, 1912. Moderately heavy rains occurred during $e afternoon. Just aa the storm be an and the wind increased i n force, the barometer fell rapidly 0.32 inc% in about aa many minutes to areduced reading of 39.78 inches at 5.20 p. m., the time of maximum wind velocity, whch was followed by an abrupt rise of 0.18 inch. At about 4.50 p. m. the wind shifted te the southeaat, increased rapidly i n velocity, attaining 56 miles an hour a t 5 p. m. and a maximum of 67 miles from the south- east at 5.21 p. m.; it decreased rapidly to ordinary velocities at 5.40 p. m. The only damage of much importance occurred at the ier of the Carolina Yacht Club, where the yacht Geisha, 65 feet i n E waa totally wrecked, entailing a loss of about $7,000. Several 3;; vessels received minor injuries. At the Union Depot a 65-foot smoke- stack was blown down and the roof of the car shed was damaged. The total loss i n the city did not exceed $lO,OOO. Georgia-During the afternoon of the 22d or early morning of the 23d numerous severe local storm occurred in Georga, with conaider- able damage to ro ert and mme loss of life at many small towns i n the State. Profabfy t i e moat severe was that which occurred near Newborn, Ga., passing through Jasper, Newton, and Morgan Counties and laying waste a tract same three-quarters of a mile wide and 25 miles long. Six persons lost their lives, much stock was killed, and many hoiaes destfoyed. Similar disturbances, but without loss of life, were reported at many other Dlaces. as Newnan. McDonough. Bowden. Cedartown. Favette- "I I . ville, Athens, Canton, and others. m. All the rivers in the district maintained stages consider- ably above the normal, but no serious floods occurred in any of the rivers of Vir inia or North Carolina. The tlic lst, but then rapidly declined, and the Neuse sli htly exceeded flood stages at Neuse and Smithfield, N. 8, on the 24th or 25th, mthout any damage. In South Carolina very moderate floods occurred in the u per Pedee and in issued. The Pedee reached a crest stage of 28.1 feet at Cherttw, S. C. on'the 24th, and the Wahree was slightdy above flood stage at Camden on the same date. Georgia.-The Altamaha (W. A. Mitchell, local forecaster, Macon): Heavy rains fell over the watershed of the Altamaha system in central Georgia from the 10th to 22cl and flood warning were issued for both the Ocmulgee ancl Oconee Rivers on the 21st. The stases attained were slightly higher than expected, the maximum sta es i n the Ocmulgee being 17.7 feet at Macon on the 23d, 19.5 feet at %Iawkinsville on the 25th, aiid 17.8 feet at Lumber City on the 26th; the highest stages in the Oconee were 22.1 feet at Milledgeville on the 17th, and 20 feet at Dublin 011 the 24th. Flood stages continued at Abbeville and Lumber City to the end of the month. No material damage resulted. The Apzlachicola (C . F. von Herrmann, section director, Atlanta): Owing to heavy rains over the lower watershed of the Flint and Chath- hoochee Rivers on April 21st, warnings were iasued for moderate floods in both rivers, bnt subsequent reports indicated that higher stages woulcl probably occur, and the warnings were repeated and received wider distribution on April 22, stages hi, her than occurred durin the recent March flood being indicated at -&any, Rainbridge, and A!,. The stages predicted were 27 feet at Albany (flood stage 20 feet), 30 feet at Baiubridge (flood stage, 22 feet), and 35 feet at A l a s (flood stage, 30 feet). The crest stages attained were: I n the Flint River at Albany 30.2 feet on the 24th, and a t Rainbridge 33.5 on the 26th, and in the (:hattahooche River at Eufaula, Ala., 45 feet on the 23d and at Alqa, Ala.. 38.9 feet on the 23d. The failure to correctly estimate the prob- able river stages on this occasion, when the flood exceeded by 3 feet the estimated stages a t all points for which warnings were issued, waa due to the failure to receive telegraphic information of unusually heavy rains that had occurred over the counties between the lower courses Roanoke was above the B ood stage at Weldon, N. C. on the Wateree Rivers, for which suitabe P warnings were 502 MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. of the Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers. Very large %-hourly amounts fell at Bainbridge, Fort Gainea, Cuthbert, etc., and the rainfall during two or three days exceeded 7 inches over 10 countiea. Considerable damage resulted from thia flood; much of the country was inundated, and railroad trrrfiic waa suspended. The plant of the Albany Power Co. waa temporarily put out of commkion by the deflec- tion of Muckafonne Creek into a new channel above the dam. A great many m a l l wagon bridges were washed away and a few iron county brid ea. Several dangerous washouts occurred on the railroads in the soutEern portion of the State were beneficial and the loss of property waa chiefly of such nature E t i t could not have been prevented. PZorida.--The Suwanee River (MI. A. J. Mitchell, Jacksonville): Very heavy rains occurred during three days from April 19 to 22 over that portion of southern Georgia and of northern Florida which com- rbes the headwaters of the Withlachochee and the Suwanee Rivers. %e up r portion of the riven began to rise on Thuraday, April 25, and by F n g y an immense volume of water had overspread a large section in southern Georgia and northern Florida. Great loss of property occurred a t the town of Ellaville, Marlison County, Fla., situated a t the junction of the two rivers. mills suspended and damaged, brid s destroyed, etc. Many catty; and other live stock were drowned. giousands of acres of land in corn and cotton were submer d. For a time traffic in Ellaville waa carried on by boats. Dowling rark, on the Suwanee south of the confluence of the two rivers, also suffe?ed great loss Alabama.-The Alabama River (P. H. Smyth, section director, Montgomery): The floods in this district began with the heavy rains on April 16, and for a week the public wm kept infomied of probable river stages. On April 18 warnings were issued that the Alabama River would reach 38 feet at Montgomery and 42 feet at Selma. The maxi- mum stages attained on this rise were: Montgomery38.7 feet, at 3 p. m. on the %th, and Selma 41.8 feet at 7 a. m. on the 19th. The rivers then began to fall, but the heavy rains of the 19th to 22d necessitated addi- tional warnings. in which the following stages were redicted: Mont- Emery 44 feet, and Selma between 48 and 49 feet. &e crest atage at ontgomery was 43.6 feet on the 24th (flood stage, 35 feet) and at Selma 48.6 feet at 7 a m. on the 24th (flood stage, 35 feet) As far aa known IIO material damage occurred that could have been prevented. Much land that had been planted since the March flood wm inundated and badly waahed. The wminga were of great benefit to the farmers along the river, particularly at places below Montgomery, on account of the unusual height of the river. Stock valued at many thousands of dollars was driven to higher land and saved. News- papers, in complimentary noticeg of the value of the river service, esti- mate that at least $lOO,OOO worth of property was saved bv the timelv The warnin Railway tracka were waehed awa -- - warnings. The Tombi bee River and tributaries (Mr. Albert Aahenberger, Mobile): The fower Tombigbee continued above flood stage throughout the month. and although the maximum &age at Demopolis, 57.5 feet on A ril 25, haa beeh exceeded several times in past years, the mean rnonily stage for April, 53.9 feet (flood stage, 35 feet), is the highest mean stage in 20 years, and the leu h of time the river haa remained above h d stage. namely, from Fe F Nary 25 to the end of April, sur- ames the record for any past year. The Black Warrior, near its con- iuence with the Tombigbee, continued very high; while at Tuscalooea after the rise from March 29 to April 4, the river again mse above flooi APRIL, 1912 stage twice during the latter half of A ril, with crest stages of Fjg feet on April 18 and 47.5 feet on the 24th (god stage, 43 feet). Suitable warning# were issued diiriiig the month and re8dted h the savin of much property, especially live stock. The wa.rnings were benefcial to Iumbermen. The lowlands for one-half to 3 miles on each side of the river for about 800 miles below Demopolis were covered with water. dCieswaigi7The Pearl and Paacagoula Rivers (Frank Montgomery, observer, endian): Owin6 to the very h e a y rams iu Mississippi at the close of March and during the middle of pril, three flood periods occurred in tho Pearl and PaRcagoula Rivers in muthemtern Misaresippi, for which warninge were imued on March 29 and April 13 and 16, 1912. The greatest damage was done in the Mcinity of Merrill, on the #ascagonh, and at Pearl River, La., on the lower Pearl. The villafie of Merrill waa entirely overflowed from 2 to 5 feet deep, and 300 families were driven from their homes. The flooded district waa 6 miles wide a t the village and 10 miles wide a few miles II the river, and averqed 8 miles wide for a diubnce of over 40 miles. N?J trains ran on the railroad between Leaf andBexley for eight days, became of submerged tncks aud washouts. DamaTe to railroad prop- erty is estimated at $15,000; to lumber interests, $8,000: live stock drowned, $2,500; and other losses, 82,OOO.
