New grant award from the New Mexico Technology Research Collaborative (TRC)

A new grant award of $376,062 was made to Steven Graves (B-2) from the New Mexico Technology Research Collaborative in response to an application entitled “Establishing a Flow Cytometry-Based Biotech Industry in New Mexico”.  The goal of the proposed work is to create a focused industry, university and National Laboratory partnership for medical instrumentation and applications development that will lay the foundation for a biotechnology industry in this sector in New Mexico. The proposed technical work combines truly unique capabilities in the TRC research institutions, such as advanced micro-optical capabilities at the University of New Mexico (UNM) and acoustic focusing technology at LANL. Together, these capabilities can be used to create a miniature, shockproof optical system for a low cost portable flow cytometer. LANL and UNM will work with Acoustic Cytometry Systems (ACS), a local startup company which LANL has selected to commercialize LANL acoustic focusing technology that enables the development of an ultra-sensitive, low-cost, portable flow cytometer. The LANL component of this project will leverage the extensive flow cytometry instrument development experience and resources resident in the National Flow Cytometry Resource to help develop and test the instruments and assays to be commercialized by ACS. Other partners in this project include Dr. Kevin Malloy of UNM’s Center for High Technology Materials and Dr. John W. Elling of  ACS.

The TRC is a state-funded program created in New Mexico to assist in the creation and expansion of a technology-based economy by encouraging collaboration between the state’s research universities and national laboratories. Established in 2005 by the New Mexico State Legislature, TRC has 10 member institutions from throughout the state representing the innovative science and technology assets of our region. TRC works to identify the core technology strengths of New Mexico and facilitates the acceleration and commercialization of these technologies to stimulate economic development and create high wage jobs by providing funding, mentoring and business development assistance.
