[This is the text of a special introduction for Jon Ormes given by Thomas L. Cline.] === I asked Jon if there was something he wanted me to say. Then, I asked Jon if there was something he didn't want me to say. He answered, "It's all over; I don't care; say what you please!" Well, I always do. So, it's my pleasure and privilege to introduce our speaker: Jonathan Ormes. You all know him as Science Director, following Les Meredith, George Pieper, Frank Martin, James Trainor and Steve Holt. He has not YET been replaced: is he irreplaceable ? (VU-GRAPH 1) But Jon also was one of the five of US who were the ONLY Chiefs of High Energy Astrophysics at NASA Headquarters, a title that no longer exists - so that record may last forever. I myself never left science for administration and bureaucracy, but Jon did, rising from PI, group leader, section head, branch head, lab chief: the only science director who went all the way through the ranks. It's amazing that he did that only with balloons: without 1 DATUM, not 1 BIT, from a space experiment !! Jon joined us here in Frank McDonald's Cosmic Ray Section in 1967, and later became Frank's proxy PI on HEAO-A with a giant cosmic ray detector. I called it "the Ormes-mobile." It WAS selected BUT later deleted. Attempts to revive it struggled on for several decades, but, finally, like General Motors' Oldsmobile itself, it's HISTORY now. Meanwhile, Jonathan carried out high altitude balloon experiments: surveys of the elements and isotopes and anti-protons in the cosmic radiation. AND he was the one who helped dream up - and create - the GCN - a great accomplishment. Clearly, Jon's experiences have covered a wide dynamic range. (VU-GRAPH 2) Here he is in the old days - bearded at the top: too bad you can't see the pony tail. You can tell, FROM the STYLE of his Abstract for today, TO the story of his early political activities that could have landed him in prison (trying to outdo Jane Fonda and John Kerry, I guess) - - you can tell: Jon Ormes is NOT your usual every-day cosmic-ray kid! So, without further ado: HERE'S JONNY !! ===
