in-crop-weather INDIANA WEEKLY WEATHER & CROPS Released: Monday, 3PM October 4, 1999 Vol. 49, #27 West Lafayette, IN CROP REPORT FOR WEEK ENDING OCTOBER 3 Mid-week showers brought temporary relief to the dry soil conditions. Harvest of corn and soybeans continued to make good progress during the week. Corn harvest remains 17 days ahead of average and soybean harvest is 8 days ahead of average, according to the Indiana Agricultural Statistics Service. Major activities during the week included harvesting corn and soybeans, tilling soils, chopping stalks, seeding winter wheat, and care of livestock. Corn Corn condition is rated 29 percent good to excellent, unchanged from last week. Ninety-nine percent of the corn acreage is mature compared with 94 percent last year and 83 percent for average. Forty percent of the corn acreage has been harvested compared with 18 percent last year and 14 percent for the average. By region, 23 percent of the corn acreage is harvested in the north, 41 percent in the central and 71 percent in the south. Moisture content of harvested corn is averaging 17 percent. Soybeans Soybean condition is rated 23 percent good to excellent, unchanged from last week. Ninety-two percent of the soybean crop is mature compared with 85 percent a year ago and 70 percent for the average. Fifty-two percent of the soybean acreage has been harvested compared with 41 percent last year and 28 percent for average. By region, 49 percent of the soybean acreage is harvested in the north, 54 percent in the central and 52 percent in the south. Moisture content of harvested soybeans is averaging 10.5 percent. Other Crops Pasture condition was rated 1 percent good, 14 percent fair, 37 percent poor and 48 percent very poor. Livestock producers continue to feed hay. Seeding of winter wheat is 20 percent complete compared with 22 percent last year and 18 percent for the average. Two percent of the wheat acreage has emerged compared with 2 percent last year and 3 percent for average. Tobacco harvest is nearing completion in the southern regions. Days Suitable and Soil Moisture For the week ending Friday, 5.6 days were rated suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture was rated 34 percent very short, 38 percent short and 28 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture was rated 57 percent very short, 36 percent short and 7 percent adequate.
