To support the One Mile Garden, an environmental public art project. Artists Bob Bingham, Ally Reeves, and Robin Hewlett will work with community participants to create the work for installation in the town of York, Alabama.

Rural Members Association, Inc.
Aliceville, AL
To support the Freedom Creek Blues Festival. The two-day event will be held at the home of blues historian and musician Willie King in rural Old Memphis, Alabama. Proposed artists include musicians Charlie Musselwhite and Kenny Neal.

ALASKA

Anchorage Opera Company
Anchorage, AK
To support the presentation of Viva Zarzuela. Co-directed by soprano Mari Hahn, the fully staged production will feature selected student apprentices and will be presented at the University of Alaska's Fine Arts Recital Hall, highlighting repertory selections of zarzuela, a Spanish form of lyric theater.

ARIZONA

Borderlands Theater Teatro Fronterizo, Inc.
Tucson, AZ
To support a production of Our Dad is in Atlantis. An original play by Mexican playwright Javier Malpica with English translation by Jorge Ignacio Cortinas, the production will tour to Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Yuma, Arizona.

Tucson Chamber Artists, Inc.
Tucson, AZ
To support a concert featuring American choral masterpieces and the premiere of a work by composer Stephen Paulus in rural Green Valley. Paulus will coach the vocalists and instrumentalists in a rehearsal and also lead a pre-concert discussion with the audience.

ARKANSAS

Fort Smith Symphony Association, Inc.
Fort Smith, AR
To support EARQUAKE!, a series of concerts targeting elementary school students. The concerts will incorporate a full orchestra, performances by the Western Arkansas Ballet, video projection, and audience participation. Cellist Stephanie Lemoine will be the featured musician.

Ozark Foothills Filmfest, Inc.
Locust Grove, AR
To support Filmfest activities including regional premieres of independent feature films, short film showcases, and panel discussions. The festival will also include programming targeted to the region's rapidly growing Hispanic population.

Southwest Arkansas Arts Council, Inc.
Hope, AR
To support performances and associated master classes for youth by the USA Ballet. As many as 40 students from Hope and the surrounding area will be selected to participate in the program that will include public performances for audiences in Southwest Arkansas.

CALIFORNIA

API Cultural Center (aka Oakland Asian Cultural Center)
Oakland, CA
To support the Lunar New Year Festival. Also known as the Spring Festival, the event will feature Bay Area artists representing the artistry of the Pan-Asian community, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese traditions.

Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose, Inc.
San Jose, CA
To support Nritya Sangati - Dance Progressions, an original, evening-length Indian dance and music concert. The work, created by choreographers Mythili and Rasika Kumar and master sitar player/composer Kartik Seshadri, will premiere at the Mexican Heritage Plaza Theater in San Jose.

American Indian Child Resource Center

To support the Mentor Artist Playwriting Project (MAPP). Through MAPP, a series of professional staged readings of original short plays written by Native American youth will be produced.

Hi Hopes Identity Discovery Foundation (aka Hope University)
Anaheim, CA
To support Beau Monde Float, a multimedia performance collaboration between artist collective MLuM and adults with developmental disabilities affiliated with the foundation. The piece will be developed through a series of workshops with topics including music composition, design, and dance.

To support APAture: A Window on the Art of Asian Pacific Americans, a multidisciplinary arts festival. Project activities will include a visual arts exhibition, film screenings, literary readings, and music performances.

To support Colors of Israel, a workshop and performance series that will introduce elementary school students to Jewish and Israeli culture and folk dance. Proposed schools are the Hart Street School, Sherman Oaks Elementary, and Carpenter Elementary Schools.

To support performances, pre-performance discussions, and master classes by the Ailey II dance company. Students receiving free or reduced lunches, low-income families, and teachers will receive discounted tickets.

To support the commissioning and presentation of Song and Dance by pianist and composer John Gentry Tennyson. Low-income students and families will receive free tickets.

Riverside Community College District Foundation
Riverside, CA
To support performances of California Theatre Center's family-theater piece, Most Valuable Player: The Story of Jackie Robinson by Mary Hall Surface. In partnership with the Riverside Public Library, youth who read books about Black history or sports will be able to receive complimentary tickets to the performance.

SEW Productions, Inc. (aka Lorraine Hansberry Theatre)
San Francisco, CA
To support architectural studies and a feasibility plan to identify a new venue for the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre. Brian Rawlinson will serve as lead architect for the project. The organization will develop strategies to keep ticket prices moderate during transition into the new venue.

Sierra Repertory Theatre, Inc.
Sonora, CA
To support a production of Little Women, a musical by lyricist Mindi Dickstein and composer Jason Howland based on the book by Louisa May Alcott. The organization will engage local educators to distribute study guides, schedule matinee performances for schools, and include the musical in the semester's curriculum.

Symphonic Jazz Orchestra
Culver City, CA
To support a concert featuring saxophonist Tom Scott and related outreach activities. Prior to the concert, outreach activities will occur at the following organizations: The World Stage Arts Education and Performance Gallery in south-central Los Angeles, The Harmony Project in Hollywood, Guadalupe Youth Center in Canoga Park, and Sierra Vista Elementary in East Los Angeles.

Watts Village Theater Company

To support the Langston Hughes Project, including the premiere of a play written by playwright Lynn Manning and directed by Nataki Garrett. The play will explore Latin cultural influences on Hughes who lived for several years with his father in Toluca, Mexico.

YMCA of San Diego County

To support the creation of a mural on the exterior of the Balboa Youth and Community Center. The organization will partner with A Reason to Survive, a nonprofit organization providing free arts programming to local children facing adversity.

COLORADO

To support performances of Representa!, a hip-hop theater play and related outreach activities. The new work will be created and performed by spoken word poet Paul Flores and rapper Julio Cardenas.

CONNECTICUT

Arts Council of Greater New Haven

To support the enhancement of the council's Web site in order to improve marketing for diverse arts and cultural institutions in Greater New Haven. The site will include an interactive calendar of events and a searchable database, as well as provide access to the regional Creative Directory, a collaborative effort by the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, the Regional Growth Partnership, and the Town Green Special Services District.

Delaware Institute for the Arts in Education

To support the presentation of Ali Bradley's Sound'n Movement, a tap ensemble of dancers and jazz musicians, and related outreach activities. Project activities will include performances at Dover's Schwartz Arts Center, pre- and post-performance discussions with the artists, and workshops scheduled at Delaware State University.

To support the 2009 Stages of Discovery Series targeting elementary, middle, and high school students. Participating companies will include Enchanted Theater Company, Philadanco, and Dallas Children's Theater on Tour. Study materials and classroom visits by organizational staff will accompany each performance.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Washington, DC
To support the creation of mosaics for installation in Watts Branch/Marvin Gaye Park in Washington, DC. Led by professional artists, student apprentices who participate in City Arts' year-round Urban Arts Mentoring Program will assist in the research, design, and creation of the mosaics.

DC Heritage Tourism Coalition, Inc. (aka Cultural Tourism DC)

To support Passport DC, a series of events providing access to international arts and culture programming at embassies located in Washington, DC. From Ethiopia and Ghana to Pakistan and Mexico, this cultural tourism program will feature authentic art exhibitions, dance and musical performances, films, and lectures, offered at little or no cost for local residents and visitors.

Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital
Washington, DC
To support the Environmental Film Festival, featuring films, performances, and guest artist discussions focused on environmental issues. Among the films that will be screened are Sea Change, featuring author and award-wining actress Lisa Harrow and the Sunrise Earth series by filmmaker David Conover.

FLORIDA

To support Harvest of Haitian Voices, an artist residency featuring actor/playwright Akin Babatunde. The musical theater work will incorporate oral histories of residents of the Haitian community in Delray Beach, Florida.

Tallahassee, FL
To support an artist residency by the Parker Quartet. The string quartet will provide recitals and workshops at several schools in Leon and Gadsden Counties.

Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Inc.
Port Charlotte, FL
To support a performance featuring flutist Lady Jeanne Galway. Galway will join the symphony for its Women's History Month performance, Celebrating Women, which will also feature female composers.

Greater Pensacola Symphony Orchestra
Pensacola, FL
To support a pre-concert talk and public performance with pianist Terrence Wilson. Students at Pensacola High School will be invited to participate in an in-school performance and lecture by Wilson as well as attend the dress rehearsal for the public performance.

Gulf Coast Museum of Art
Largo, FL
To support the exhibition Something to Look Forward To, featuring the work of celebrated African American artists. Project activities will include a discussion with painter Sam Gilliam, a lecture by curator Franklin Sirmans, a film series, and docent-led tours.

United Arts Council of Collier County

To support an artist residency by Brazz Dance Theater, a modern dance company. The project will include workshops and a repertory concert for residents of the agricultural town of Immokalee, Florida.

GEORGIA

To support My Soul is a Witness: Spirit and Spirituality in the Music of America's Enslaved. The concert series, featuring tenor Leroy E. Bynum and the Albany State University Concert Chorale, will highlight the significance of the genre known as African American spirituals.

American Jewish Committee
Atlanta, GA
To support the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. Film presentations exploring themes of Jewish culture, heritage, and history will be augmented by guest speakers and panel discussions featuring actors, filmmakers, academics, and authors. Recent participants have included director Paul Mazursky and actors Jerry Adler and Judd Hirsch.

Atlanta Chinese Dance Company
Norcross, GA
To support West to East, East to West, an original Chinese dance production. Featuring guest artists Hangdong Xu of Dance China New York and Tara Lee of the Atlanta Ballet, the production will examine the influence of western dance techniques on traditional dance in China.

Better Hometown Task Force, Inc.
Dawson, GA
To support the Southern Soul Festival. The event will take place in the historic downtown area of Dawson, Georgia, and will feature local and regional artists who will perform for audiences from the surrounding nine-county area.

Horizon Theatre Company, Inc.

To support the 2009 New South Playwrights Festival. Project activities will include a full production of a new play, staged readings of new works, and a week of professional mentoring for high school and college writers.

To support Call My Name, a series of quilting workshops targeting the African American community. The workshops will encourage dialogue about the AIDS quilt and related issues of recovery and loss.

To support the exhibition Richard Hunt: Promethean Mythmaker [Sculptures, Drawings, and Prints]. Hunt will participate in a lecture that will be available to students on three SCAD campuses via Webcast.

To support a performance of An Early Birthday for Abraham Lincoln with musicians Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. Other artists will include members of the Tenth Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Band and the Springfield International Folk Dancers. To support the 10th Annual Juneteenth Jamboree of New Plays, a festival of staged readings and related activities. Playwright Micki Grant and actor Grenoldo Frazier will lead workshops for youth and adults.

To support the creation of a public mural. Local artist Severin Haines will lead youth in the design and creation of a mural inspired by notable artists who were born in or lived in New Bedford, such as German American painter Albert Bierstadt.

To support Music, Dance, and Stories: A West African Celebration. Artists from Senegal and Mali, as well as regionally-based world music musicians, will participate in public workshops and perform for audiences from northern and central Berkshire County.

To support a concert featuring violinist Irina Muresanu under the conductorship of NEA Jazz Master Gunther Schuller. Related activities will include a rehearsal at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, a pre-concert recital, and a post-concert question and answer session with the artists.

To support performances of Montanta Repertory Theatre's production of To Kill A Mockingbird by Christopher Sergel, based on the Harper Lee novel. Dramatist and education specialist Stacy Coates will address issues of tolerance and diversity during school and community dialogues.

Highland, MI
To support an animation camp, as well as an exhibition of stills and screenings of films created during the camp. Economically disadvantaged teens, and in some cases teens who have physical and cognitive disabilities, will be taught animation by filmmaker John Prusack during the camp.

Interlochen Center for the Arts
Interlochen, MI
To support a performance by the Complexions Contemporary Ballet. In addition to participating in several public radio interviews, the artists will lead a master class for Interlochen Arts Academy students.

Lenawee Symphony Orchestra Society

To support American Rhapsody, a concert featuring violinist Janet Sung and new works by composer Kenneth Fuchs. Sung and Fuchs will participate in a pre-concert lecture.

Saugatuck Center for the Arts, Inc.

To support The Culture of Mexico Festival. Activities will include performances by the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago, an exhibit of work by Teresa Villegas, and a pinata workshop for children.

William Bonifas Fine Arts Center, Inc.

To support the creation of a database of arts organizations, galleries, and artist studios located in the state's upper penninsula. The collected information will be published in the Art Tour of the U.P. map, to be distributed to visitor centers in the lower penninsula and northern Wisconsin. To support Ashesh Barsha, Never-ending Monsoon, an exploration of climate and environmental issues. Scheduled to premiere at the Southern Theater, the dance concert will be accompanied by an exhibition highlighting the research materials on which the choreography is based.

Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, Inc.

To support an outreach project that will include music performances, exhibitions, studio tours, and readings featuring artists from the Red Wing region and greater Minnesota. Selected authors, illustrators, and musicians will discuss their work in informal and formal presentations for audiences from southeast Minnesota.

Franconia Sculpture Park

To support the Arts and Music Festival which will include guided tours of the sculpture park, live music, and poetry readings. The festival will celebrate new sculpture installations at the park. Past sculptors have included Lishan Chang, Melanie VanHouten, and Su-Chen Hung.

MISSISSIPPI

To support The Time Has Come 2010, a festival celebrating Washington County natives who are nationally-recognized artists. During the four-day festival, the work of artists such as sculptor William Beckwith, writer Brooks Haxton, and visual artist Alex O'Neal will be highlighted through panel discussions, workshops, and performances.

To support a performance by the Russian National Ballet Theatre. Discounted and free tickets will be offered to education, community, and civic organizations.

MONTANA

Alberta Bair Theater Corporation
Billings, MT
To support New Music for the Old West, a concert series featuring diverse musical styles. Proposed guest artists ScrapArtsMusic (rooted in world music traditions), the string quartet Ethel, jazz vocalist Rachael Price, Edgar Meyer, and Mike Marshall (masters of modern acoustic music), and the American Chamber Players will perform and participate in outreach activities for audiences from Montana and northern Wyoming.

Billings Symphony Society (aka Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale)
Billings, MT
To support a concert and related outreach activities featuring violinist Chee-Yun Kim. Kim will perform Beethoven's Violin Concerto at the historic Alberta Bair Theater, as well as participate in lecture demonstrations for Billings-area middle and high school students.

To support an artist residency by classical guitarist Christopher Parkening and baritone Jubilant Sykes. Activities will include workshops, lectures, master classes, an open dress rehearsal, and a public concert with the symphony.

Headwaters Dance Co.
Missoula, MT
To support performances of Montana Suite Part IV: Crow Country, choreographed by Donna Uchizono. The organization's artistic director will offer master classes at area schools as preparation for student attendance. Following the performances, Uchizono will join local students and audiences in talk-back sessions.

Whitefish Theatre Co.
Whitefish, MT
To support performances by The Gospel Hummingbirds. The theater will work with partner organizations including Montana Veterans' Home, Agency of Aging, and Whitefish Housing Authority to target underserved constituencies.

NEVADA

To support a new jazz composition by Woody Woods and performances highlighting the contribution of African Americans to jazz. The performances for both children and adults will include a jazz quintet, vocalists, dancers, and a narrator.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

Franconia, NH
To support the Frost Place Festival of Poetry featuring author Chase Twichell. Festival events include lectures, public workshops, and readings.

NEW JERSEY

Burlington County College
Pemberton, NJ
To support The Beauty of the Pinelands, an exhibition featuring botanical illustrator Robin Jess and photographer Michael Hogan. The exhibition will be held at the Burlington County College Student Art Gallery, and will include several community outreach activities, such as discussions with the artists.

Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, Inc.

To support The Year of the Ox Celebration, featuring pipa artist Hong Tao Sun, dancer Yao Zhong Zhang, and paper-cutting artist Ho Tien Cheng. The performance will be presented at the New Jersery Performing Arts Center (Newark, NJ), Queens College (Flushing, NY), and Kingsborough Community College (Brooklyn, NY).

To support an educational tour of Hansel and Gretel, composed by Engelbert Humperdink. Related activities will include distribution of study guides and a post-performance question-and-answer session with the artists.

People and Stories Gente y Cuentos, Inc.

To support literary readings, discussions, and workshops with guest artists Lauren B. Davis, Paul Muldoon, and Alvin Auburt. Partnering organizations are the Bo Robinson Education and Training Center, a residential facility that provides job training services for formerly incarcerated men and women and Operation Fatherhood, an organization that provides workforce resources for non-custodial fathers. Project participants will be selected from the organizations.

Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, Inc.
Madison, NJ
To support the bilingual main stage production and tour of Papa Esta en la Atlantida by Mexican playwright Javier Malpica with translations by American playwright Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas and accompanying outreach activities. The playwrights will participate in several discussions about their work and issues facing Latinos in America. The production will travel to several Latino communities.

NEW MEXICO

Mimbres Region Arts Council, Inc.
Silver City, NM
To support the creation of murals for installation in the mining district of Grant County. Selected artists - including Carlene Roters, Cecelia Standford, and Zoe Wolfe - will work with elementary, middle, and high school students to create the murals. Students will interview local residents to incorporate local history and aesthetics in the mural design.

Taos Center for the Arts
Taos, NM
To support a performance and master class by the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble. Prior to the performance, local artists will lead workshops in modern dance, lighting design, and stagecraft for area students.

NEW YORK
