During the first two years samples were collected at a series of fixed sampling sites, then in 1993 a stratified random sampling approach was added to the collection effort. This approach utilizes a computer routine that randomly selects sampling sites from a pool of potential sites that have been categorized by strata (e.g., aquatic habitat type, distance to shore, connectivity to main channel). The results from these collections are stored in an Oracle database at the Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center (UMESC). UMESC provides free access to the data through the Center’s Web site (www.umesc.usgs.gov). Several methods/routines are available for accessing the data (e.g., graphical browser, GIS query tool) this particular file is designed to accompany the main Oracle database (http://www.umesc.usgs.gov/data_library/fisheries/fish_page.html). Purpose: The Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center administers the Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRMP), authorized under the Water Resources Development Act of 1986 (Public Law 99-662). The mission of the LTRMP is to provide decision makers with information to maintain the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) as a viable large river ecosystem given its multiple-use character. The long-term goals of the Program are to understand the system, determine resource trends and impacts, develop management alternatives, manage information, and develop useful products. The collection and distribution of fish data aids the Center in meeting these goals. Supplemental_Information: Fishes are one of the most diverse and abundant natural resources of the UMRS. Several features contribute to the great amount of interest fishes receive from the general public, fishery managers, and aquatic ecologists: (A) UMRS fishes support multimillion-dollar commercial and sport fisheries. (B) Fishes respond to a variety of hydrologic, water quality, and habitat variables. (C) Scientists and fishery managers recognize fish communities as an integrative index to a complex set of physical and biological conditions on the UMRS; that is, fish are indicators of the biotic integrity of the UMRS. In addition, impacts of sedimentation, increased navigation, and altered water levels in the UMRS are often perceived by the general public in terms of changes in the fish community or fish habitat. And (D) Recent research demonstrates that fishes often have major controlling effects on other organisms, including vegetation, aquatic macroinvertebrates, zooplankton, and phytoplankton, and even on nutrient cycling and sediment resuspension. Therefore, information on fish is often required to understand other organisms and some physical/chemical processes. The field stations use both reference keys and their reference collection for species identification. If a specimen’s identity remains in question after reviewing reference keys and collections, the specimen is vouchered by a recognized professional at one of several Universities or Natural History Museums located throughout the Midwest. Taxonomic_Completeness: The master species table stored at UMESC contains entries for additional fish species that have the potential for being collected within the UMRS, but at the time this metadata was prepared had yet been captured by the LTRMP field crews. This metadata file only contains entries for those species collected by the LTRMP field stations. This metadata file is scheduled for review on an annual basis, at the end of each sampling season. A listing of which species has been collected at each field station (inc. which species were collected by year and how often they appeared in the catch) is available at http://www.umesc.usgs.gov/data_library/fisheries/graphical/fish_front.html. General_Taxonomic_Coverage: Most specimens are identified to the species level, however on occasion some difficulties are encountered. If a suspected hybrid is encountered it is recorded as such. The database also contains listings for unidentifiable species (e.g., unidentifiable young of the year), and several generic family level categories (e.g., unidentified Cyprinidae (minnow)). When field identification of a particular species is in doubt, the field crews bring a sample to the office where it is compared against their reference collection and/or a species key. Logical_Consistency_Report: All data contained within the fixed and stratified random site fisheries database are point data. The positions of the fixed sampling sites were determined using GPS receivers. The positions of the stratified random sites are selected by a computer using the software programs ArcInfo and SAS, and a geographic information system (GIS) data set of potential sampling locations. Completeness_Report: All collection data are entered into the Oracle database. If a field crew is unable to navigate to one of the computer selected sampling sites, they are provided with a list of randomly generated alternate sampling sites. The field crew then navigates to the closest alternate site that has the same strata type as the inaccessible site, and samples that location. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The horizontal positional accuracy depends upon the global position system device used to navigate to and record the position of the field crew. Over the years equipment and accuracies have changed. Whenever possible, differential beacons, post processing, and other procedures have been used to bring the position accuracy of field samples to within 10 meters of the computer selected sampling site. Lineage: Methodology: Methodology_Type: Field Methodology_Identifier: Methodology_Keyword_Thesaurus: None Methodology_Keyword: stratified random sampling Methodology_Description: Since 1993, collections have been made under a spatially stratified random sampling design (ftp://ftp.umesc.usgs.gov/pub/media_archives/documents/reports/1995/95p00201.pdf). Samples sites are chosen randomly within each of 7 spatial strata, mapped in a GIS and selected from a 50 x 50m grid overlaid on the strata delineations. Randomization provides unbiased parameter estimates (central tendency and dispersion) of abundance, though precision is a function of sample variance and sample size (ftp://ftp.umesc.usgs.gov/pub/media_archives/documents/reports/2001/01t001.pdf). Cochran's estimator for stratified random samples is used to arrive at strata weighted parameter estimates of abundance for an entire study reach. Annually, effort is spread uniformly and independently across 3 consecutive time periods within a year (each period receives equal effort, and randomization in site selection is performed separately for each period - reduces risk of annual inferential losses if one period cannot be sampled, say due to a 500 year flood). Thus, the designed scales of inference are (1) a study reach, and (2) the year. Effort is also spread in a standardized manner through time, among 10 gear types (just 6 since 2002 - ftp://ftp.umesc.usgs.gov/pub/media_archives/documents/reports/2002/02t001.pdf). All data are georeferenced.
