Windows XP instructions for joining EUD wireless network

Please note that one must be running Windows 2000, XP Home, or XP Pro or higher in order to use our 802.1X wireless networking authentication.

Setup

Importing Certificates

You must have already completed this step.

Wireless Network Connections setup

You should have already downloaded HOWTO: EAP/TLS Setup for FreeRADIUS and Windows XP Supplicant [pdf, 796k], in the Importing Certificates section.
Please follow the directions from pages 3 through 5 of this guide.

As accompanying information to those screen shots, here are instructions (for Windows XP Professional):

  • Open the Network Connections Control Panel and double-click on Wireless Network Connections.
  • In the "Wireless Network Connection Status" window, click on Properties.
  • In the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" window, click on the Wireless Networks tab.
    • Make sure that "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" is checked.
    • Under "Preferred Networks" at the bottom of this window, click on "Add...".
  • The new window should be labelled "Wireless network properties" the first time you see it.
    • In the "Association" tab:
      • Enter the SSID as "AirEUD".
      • Network Authentication is "Open".
      • Data Encryption is "WEP".
      • Turn on the checkbox for "The key is provided to me automatically".
    • In the "Authentication" tab:
      • Turn on "Enable IEEE 802.1X authentication for this network".
      • Set EAP Type to "Smart Card or other Certificate".
      • Click on Properties.
  • In "Smart Card or other Certificate Properties" window:
    • Turn on "Use a certificate on this computer" (And "Use simple certificate selection")
    • Turn on "Validate server certificate".
    • Scroll down the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" list until you find "EUD System CA" and put a check in the box to its left.
    • Click "OK" to dismiss this window.
  • Work your way back out and close the various windows remaining open. (Click "OK" to dismiss most of these windows.)
