Works with people around the world to end hunger and poverty and care for the environment. Since its founding in 1944, HPI has helped more than seven million people gain self-reliance. Project participants are given animals and plants that suit their needs, such as cows, goats, sheep, llamas, water buffaloes, bees, and tree seedlings. Participants also receive training in sustainable agriculture and livestock management. Each recipient "passes on the gift" of animal offspring, seeds, skills, or other resources to neighbors. Projects emphasize self-reliance, education, gender equity, peace, agroecology, and animal well-being. In addition, HPI has initiatives that focus on HIV/AIDS, microenterprise, and social orphans.
