Dr. Ole Danbolt Mjos
Chairman
The Nobel Committee
The Norwegian Nobel Institute
Drammensveien 19
NO-0255
Oslo, Norway

Dear Dr. Mjos:

I am honored, for the third time, to nominate Heifer International for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Since 1944, Heifer International (HI), which is headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas, USA, has helped more than 7 million impoverished families in 125 countries become self-reliant through food and animal management, environmentally-sound agricultural production training, and more recently, monetary loan assistance and HIV/AIDS education. HI’s “living loan” of animals helps families lift themselves out of poverty and achieve self-reliance. Milk, eggs, meat and other benefits from the animals improve nutrition and health. HI partner families sell products such as wool and milk to pay for education, clothing, health care and better housing.

As of 2008, HI is celebrating 64 years of humanitarian service. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton complimented HI by saying, “Your work has saved countless individuals from starvation and has brought new life to troubled lands.”

I strongly believe Heifer International serves as a wonderful example throughout the world of an effective humanitarian assistance organization and that HI would be a tremendously positive reflection upon both the Nobel Institute and the prize itself.

Thank you for considering Heifer International for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Sincerely

[signed]

Mark E. Souder
Member of Congress
