Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains the morphometric information for birds caught in mistnets and with other means for sampling Avian Influenza (AI). These data were collected during 23rd July 2006 until 27th September 2006 at seven locations in the Khabaravosk region, Amursk region and Jewish Autonomous Republik of Russian Far East, in collaboration with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, USA. Exact catching location details are given in the following: Schastia Bay, Amur Estuary, lat 53.3831, lon 141.2816 with 1 net, date 7/23/2006; Khingan Nature Reserve vicinity (Antonovskoye Lake), lat 49.4459, lon 129.9756 with 19nets on 15.08.2006; Khingan Nature Reserve (Kleshenskoye Lake), lat 49.4007, lon 129.7265 with 2 nets on 23.08.2006; Khingan Nature Reserve (Lebedinoye Lake), lat 48.9267, lon 130.5082 with 2 nets on 27.09.2006; at Khingan Nature Reserve vicinity, lat 49.4442, lon 130.0833 with 4 nets on 26.08.2006; at Burea Reservoir, lat 50.3324, lon 130.5621 at date 5.09.2006; at Zabelovka Lake, Russian Far East, lat 48.4332, lon 134.2234, with 9 nets on 19.08.2006; Ussuri River mouth, lat 48.2949, lon 134.8259, at 15.08.2006 It was assumed that some birds in that study area link with Alaska. This dataset focuses on passerines, shorebirds and seabirds. Measurements from 133 species are reported in the dataset. Avian Influenza analysis of samples is coming forward, and will be published elsewhere. Here we present on traditional bird banding and opportunistic measurements of birds caught in the framework of the AI sampling campaign 2006. This dataset links with 6 other sites in the Russian Far East, and is compatible to other bird banding studies along the flyway. It represents for the first time a coordinated study done during fall migration and with identical methods at 6 sites within the Sea of Okhotsk region, Russian Far East. Data from the other study sites are also available online. An analysis of these data is coming forward; for details please contact authors and project collaborators.
Purpose:
These data were collected in order to link the potential occurrence of Avian Influenza in the Russian Far East with morphometric measures for the same individuals. Data from this site are compatible with 5 other locations where the same data where collected following an identical protocol. This would allow to learn more about state of the birds, subspecies, migration tactics, flyways and Avian Influenza.
Supplemental_Information:
The sampling and banding sites are geo-referenced. The following sites were surveyed by the survey team members: Aleksey Antonov, Vladimir Pronkevich, Andrey Averin: Schastia Bay, Amur Estuary, Russian Far East, lat 53.3831, lon 141.2816 1 net, date 7/23/2006, time 23.30 Aleksey Antonov: Khingan Nature Reserve vicinity (Antonovskoye Lake), Russian Far East, lat 49.4459, lon 129.9756 19nets, date 15.08.2006, time 20:45 Aleksey Antonov: Khingan Nature Reserve (Kleshenskoye Lake), Russian Far East, lat 49.4007, lon 129.7265, 2 nets 23.08.2006, time 7 h Aleksey Antonov: Khingan Nature Reserve (Lebedinoye Lake), Russian Far East, lat 48.9267, lon 130.5082 date: 9/27/2006, time 7h Aleksey Antonov: Khingan Nature Reserve vicinity, Russian Far East, lat 49.4442, lon 130.0833, 4 nets, date 26.08.2006, time 17:30 Aleksey Antonov: Burea Reservoir, Russian Far East, lat 50.3324, lon 130.5621, date 5.09.2006, time 21:00 Andrey Averin: Zabelovka Lake, Russian Far East, lat 48.4332, lon 134.2234, 9 nets, date 8/19/2006, time 7h Vladimir Pronkevich: Ussuri River mouth, Russian Far East, lat 48.2949, lon 134.8259, date 15.08.2006, time 20.00-21.00 The Avian Influenza component of this study is currently in progress and will be reported elsewhere. For details, please contact authors. The Banding Protocol followed the 'revised European African Songbird Migration Network' standards (Bairlein et al. 1995; available online) and used the Kaiser fat score. The suggested field protocol is included in the methods section for transparency. The AI data are coming forward, they can be linked with this data set by the banding and individual id number. The AI data have a database of their own. We used ITIS USDA for taxonomica information. Bird ID according to Alexey Antonov, using the books: 1. 1. Ryabycev V. K. 2002. Guide for birds of Ural and Western Siberia. Ekaterinburg. Ural State University edition. 2. Marchant J., Prater T., Haymann P. 1988. Shorebirds. An identification guide to the waders of the world. Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston. 3. Ivanov A. I., Schtegmann B. K. 1964. Brief identification guide for the birds of USSR. Moscow-Leningrad. ''Science'' edition. ; ; subspecies are often not well described for this region, and thus no data on this issue are given. For digital data: We used ITIS USDA for taxonomic information. For mis-mathces, we used: Stepanyan L. S. 2003. Conspectus of the ornithological fauna of Russia and adjacent territoties. Moskow. 806 p.
Taxonomic_Completeness:
Species were indentified by Alexey Antonov; some species esacped the nets etc. and were not further recorded. Not all birds in the region can be caught with mist nets, and the inventory could be incomplete in these regards. We used ITIS USDA for taxonomica information. But for Acrocephalus arundinaceus orientalis (Salicaria turdina orientalis Temmink et Schlegel, 1847) Cyanopica cyanus (Pallas, 1776) Larus heuglini Bree, 1876 Motacilla alba leucopsis (Motacilla leucopsis Gould, 1838) Motacilla taivana (Swinhoe, 1863) Muscicapa latirostris Raffles, 1822 Parus cyanus Pallas, 1770 Parus minor Temminck et Schlegel, 1848 Parus montanus Baldenstein, 1827 Parus palustris Linnaeus, 1758 Phragmaticola aeedon (Pallas, 1776) the most authoritive Russian source on taxonomy was used: Stepanyan L. Lab: Data were cleaned and worked up in EXCEL. The detailed protocol is the following: Bird Banding Protocol, Summer/Fall Season 2006 (version 2: Fairbanks 10th July 2006) Bird Bands are provided by the local contractors for each of the birds caught and swaped for this project (>1500; this includes passerines, shorebirds, gulls and waterfowl). Bird Band Numbers are used as a reference for linking AI swap samples stored in tubes. If bird is not banded, use a unique and well documented code for birds, e.g. date+species+number. Bird Data to be collected: Full Name of Collector (full name, no abbreviations) Location of Sample Collection (local name, English and Russian) Coordinates of Sample (latitude and longitude; use GPS if possible) Net Number where sample was caught/collected (if possible, provide map/sketch of net setup) Date of Sample Collection (day day, month month, year year year year) Time of Sample Collection (local time 00.00 - 24.00h) Species Name 1 (English name; subspecies if possible) Species Name 2 (Scientific name only if appropriate) Bird Band Number (if collected; assumes Russian banding scheme. Mark if from dropping or dead bird) Wing length (in millimeters, flattened and unflattened for international compatibility and science reasons) Head to Beak (maximum in millimeters; not used for passerines) (Tarsus and Beak Length is not measured; can be done voluntarily by the bander. Document method used) Age (follow EURING standards; see Manual enclosed) Sex (where possible; document method used to determine) Primaries (BTO Moult Score Card; see Manual enclosed) Body Moult (Beginning, Middle, End judged by expert knowledge =majority of feathers) Body Fat (Kaiser Scale; see reference enclosed) Weight (in grams; to the nearest 0.1 g for birds weighing <200 g) Feather Samples (5 each: Growing Feathers, Body, Secondary, Tail Central: plug not cut. For Primaries, please use one from outer 10th) Blood samples (usually not taken, unless for specific species and numbers and when Falk Huettmann is around; consult with Falk Huettmann for details) Photo taken ? (usually not taken, unless for specific species of interest (e.g. document outliers) or when Falk Huettmann is around; consult with Falk Huettmann for details; document the film role and/or digital camera) Comments: Anything relevant to understand, analyze and interprete the sample and data DIGITAL DATA: Please make sure that the Banding Data as well as the AI Sampling Data are keyed in, and provided, as an EXCEL sheet according to the data scheme above (see Excel template enclosed). Metadata will be created as well (see Word template enclosed).
