Ari Patrinos, Ph.D.

Dr. Patrinos received a diploma in mechanical and electrical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens and a Ph.D. in mechanical and astronautical sciences from Northwestern University.   He has served on the faculty of the University of Rochester and since 1973 has worked in the DOE Laboratory system, including Argonne, Oak Ridge, and Brookhaven National Laboratories.   His research has included atmospheric turbulence, biomedical engineering, environmental chemistry, climate change, and statistical methods.   He served on the staff of the Environmental Protection Agency and joined DOE in 1988 to lead the development of DOE program in global environmental change.

Since 1995, Dr. Patrinos has been the Associate Director for Biological and Environmental Research in the DOE Office of Science and oversees research activities including genomics, structural biology, and health effects of low dose radiation, nuclear medicine, global climate change, and basic research underpinning DOE environmental restoration effort.   Dr. Patrinos was the director of the DOE component of the U.S. Human Genome Project and is DOE’s representative to the U.S. Climate Change Science and Technology programs.   He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Geophysical Union, and a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society.
