Taylor Lumber & Treating Site
Cleanup Activities
In 2008, EPA contractors are completing the final, long-term (remedial) cleanup of this site (PDF) (182pp, 5.4MB), which began in 2007. This summer, EPA contractors are also conducting a time-critical (emergency removal) cleanup of contamination that was discovered during remedial cleanup last year.
To complete the emergency removal cleanup, Oregon Highway 18B, the northern business route that passes through Willamina and Sheridan, will be closed from 5 p.m. on August 1 until 6 a.m. on August 4. During the highway closure, EPA contractors will replace a failed culvert and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will repave the affected section of highway. For information on the highway closure, visit the ODOT at: http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/
The remedial and emergency removal cleanups will protect workers at the site from contact with contaminated material and prevent contaminated water from leaving the site. The cleanup will keep the most contaminated water and soil behind the previously constructed underground barrier wall and asphalt cap. Groundwater from inside the barrier wall will continue to be pumped out, treated on site, and then discharged to the river. Other areas that are not as highly contaminated have been covered with asphalt and some of the soil was removed and disposed off-site.
Site Summary
Taylor Lumber and Treating operated a wood-treating plant at 22125 SW Rock Creek Road in Sheridan, Oregon. For over thirty years, toxic and cancer-causing chemicals, such as creosote and pentachlorophenol (PCP), were used to preserve wood. Many wood-treating chemical spills contaminated soil and groundwater at the site.
Since 1994, EPA has conducted three emergency removal cleanups at the site to protect on-site workers, local residents, and the South Yamhill River from exposure to site contamination. In 2000, an underground barrier wall was built to contain the most contaminated groundwater and soil, and an asphalt cap was installed over that area. A residential yard was cleaned up, as well as ditches within and next to that yard and the lumber facility. In 2007, EPA contractors began the final long-term (remedial) cleanup at the site.
The property is currently owned and operated by Pacific Wood Preserving of Oregon (PWPO). PWPO is now producing treated wood products using chemicals that are safer for their employees and for the environment.
