Calhoun County High School's Gospel Choir to Help Commemorate 9/11: Congressman Clyburn Invited the Group to Represent Sixth District in Washington, D.C.

(Washington, DC) -  Today members of the Calhoun County High School "Singin' Saints" Gospel Choir will head for Washington, D.C. to sing in a special performance of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference (CBCF ALC) Gospel Extravaganza.  The Gospel Extravaganza is an annual event at the CBCF ALC, but this year it will hold special meaning as the nation pauses to reflect on the events of September 11th.  Sixth District Congressman James E. Clyburn invited the choir to perform at tomorrow's concert after hearing the students sing at a Martin Luther King Day ceremony in St. Matthews this year.

"This is the first year I have asked high school students to perform at the Gospel Extravaganza instead of a professional group,"  Congressman Clyburn said.  "When I saw the Singin' Saints in January, I was so impressed with their power and poise that I decided that day to find a way to show off this choir in Washington."

This is not the first national attention received by the decade-old Calhoun County High School group.  They have recorded a live album, which is in the hands of a major record label's distributor.  The Gospel Choir is under the direction of Mrs. Rosemary Smith Griffin.

Congressman Clyburn felt it was important to have the students perform at this year's Gospel Extravaganza because it will be very meaningful as the participants reflect on the anniversary of 9/11.

"These young people represent the faith and hope of our nation as it is reflected in the faces of youth," Congressman Clyburn said.  "The timing of this concert will only enhance their extraordinarily moving performance."

The CBCF ALC Gospel Extravaganza is scheduled for Thursday, September 12th at 8:00 p.m. at the Renaissance Hotel Grand Ballroom, 999 9th Street, NW in Washington, D.C.
