MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA TO BENEFIT AREA FOOD
BANKS
It's that time of year when leaves start turning
their bright autumn colors, the air is crisp and cool, and Idaho
Falls starts gearing up for the wildest night of all!
Yes, it's time for Lockstock! The annual dance sponsored
by Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Company benefits the Upper
Valley Food Bank which distributes food to area food kitchens
and food banks.
This year, as in the past two years, local bands
will provide music and numerous contests will be held throughout
the night.
The third annual dance will be held from 7 p.m. to
1 a.m., Friday, Oct. 2 5 at the Shilo Inn, Idaho Falls. Throughout
the night, classical rock & roll will be provide by Chris
Hertz, Goodwill, Burnin' Daylight, Eclipse, the Lockheedians,
a group of musically talented Lockheed Martin Idaho employees,
and Lane "Big Daddy" Allgood.
During the dance DeMarcos Men's Clothing Store will
once again sponsor a limbo contest. Store gift certificates will
be awarded to the top three place winners in the men's and women's
categories.
Other fun events are planned and hors d'oeuvres and
a cash bar will be available all night.
Entrance to the dance is four food cans or $4. "In
the past years, Lockstock has helped us out tremendously,"
said Ray Barnes, nutrition coordinator at Eastern Idaho Special
Services Agency in Idaho Falls, which manages area food banks.
"If we didn't have Lockstock, we'd be out of food real quick
during the winter months."
Last year's dance raised about two tons of food and
$762 to refill area food banks. In 1994, Lockstock raised over
one ton of food and $739.
Two major food drives are held annually to benefit
the Food Bank. One is in May and is sponsored by the postal carriers;
the other is the National Boy Scout Food Drive in November.
Lockstock is another major way of helping to restock
the food shelves. "The Lockstock food drive always helps
carry us through the winter. This is the time of year we have
more people move into the area because of the harvest. Many find
themselves without work and thanks to Lockheed Martin we're able
to help them," Barnes said.
EISSA distributes food donated from the federal government
and events like Lockstock to soup kitchens and food pantries throughout
a nine-county region of southeastern Idaho.
It is estimated there are 1,646 homeless people in
Idaho Falls, Barnes said, and the need for assistance is growing.
"In the month of August, 756 households received assistance
and 841 food boxes were handed out that consist of food for three
meals for three days," he said. "Our food kitchens served
3,960 meals to people."
All proceeds raised at Lockstock will be channeled
to food banks by the Bonneville County United Way. The agency
will transfer all money and food collected to EISSA for distribution
to the Idaho Falls Food Bank, St. Mark's Sandwich Kitchen, Holy
Rosary Church, the Salvation Army, the Haven (an emergency housing
program), the Idaho Migrant Council and Mission Batista, all in
Idaho Falls. EISSA also will channel food and cash raised during
Lockstock to food banks in Ririe, Salmon, Challis, St. Anthony
and other nearby communities.
"When a corporation like Lockheed Martin can
inspire community involvement to address a compelling social need
and at the same time bring people together for a night of good
music, you have a winning combination. Lockstock demonstrates
what's best about Idaho Falls - people caring about each other.
We're glad to be a part of that spirit," said Greg Ossmann,
director of public affairs.
Lockstock is also being sponsored by KIDK-TV Channel
3, Idaho Falls, and K-96 Hot Country Radio.
