Selected Readings on the History and Use of Old Livestock Breeds

            For centuries animals have worked with and for people. Cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, poultry and other livestock have been an essential part of agriculture and our history as a nation. With the change of agriculture from a way of life to a successful industry, we are losing our agricultural roots. Although we descend from a nation of farmers, few of us can name more than a handful of livestock breeds that are important to our production of food and fiber. The variety of breeds represents genetic diversity: a priceless inheritance from our ancestors. Genetic diversity is an important resource that is necessary for the successful adaptation of our livestock to meet the unpredictable needs of our future.

            The American Minor Breeds Conservancy (AMBC) has sponsored an art exhibit, The Art of American Livestock Breeding, to recognize the role of livestock breeds in the success of American livestock production. The exhibit is about the cultural richness of our livestock heritage. The paintings convey America's historic relationship with the land, our pride in breeding excellent livestock, and our love of the natural world. The paintings also serve as a record of the development of a breed and its function, as well as providing documentation of early pedigreed livestock.

            This Special Reference Brief (SRB) was developed by the Animal Welfare Information Center, at the National Agricultural Library, to compliment the AMBC art exhibition. Breeds featured in this SRB reflect those represented in the art exhibit. The literature contained within each of the breed categories represent historical information on the selection, characteristics, breeding, and use of these livestock. Current literature on present breeding, function, use and related problems are also included. Several agricultural databases and the current and historical collections of the National Agricultural Library, were utilized to develop this document.

            The National Agricultural Library (NAL) is one of the richest and most complete repositories of agricultural information in the world. NAL archives rare books and prints of livestock that are valuable in tracing the history of the development of agricultural practices. The selected readings from the NAL collection will provide extensive background to the reader who wishes to gain further information about the breeds of livestock featured in the AMBC exhibit. All citations that are in the NAL collection will include the NAL call number.
