This is the second year of the First Spouse Gold Coin Series. This series features the Nation’s first spouses on one-half ounce, 24-karat $10 gold coins, appearing in the order that they served as first spouse.
First Spouse Bronze Medal Set: This four-medal set includes one each of the 2008 1 5/16 inch First Spouse Bronze Medals which bear the likeness of this year’s First Spouse Gold Coins. The medals are packaged in mylar and inserted into a folded card, which contains pertinent product information, and a custom-made envelope. The four medals in this set feature:
Elizabeth Monroe: The obverse, designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Joel Iskowitz, and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart, features a portrait of Elizabeth Monroe. The reverse, designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Donna Weaver, and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles L. Vickers, depicts her at a reception marking the 1818 reopening of the White House after it had been burned during the War of 1812.
Louisa Adams: The obverse, designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Susan Gamble, and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill, features a portrait of Louisa Adams. The reverse, designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna, depicts her with her young son Charles on an arduous journey across Europe to join her husband in Paris.
Jackson’s Liberty: President Andrew Jackson served without a spouse and his First Spouse Bronze Medal’s obverse features a reproduction of the capped bust, lettered edge half-dollar obverse coin design minted in the early 1800s and designed by United States Mint Engraver John Reich (1768-1833). The reverse, designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Justin Kunz, and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart, features him as the war hero “Old Hickory,” who led a force of approximately 4,000 troops against the British Army at the Battle of New Orleans.
Van Buren’s Liberty: President Martin Van Buren also served without a spouse and his First Spouse Bronze Medal’s obverse features a reproduction of the Liberty Seated Dime obverse coin minted in the early 1800s and designed by United States Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht (1785-1844). The reverse, designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Thomas Cleveland, and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz, depicts him as a young man at the family’s tavern in the village of Kinderhook, New York.
