The Statistical Briefs created before 1995 have presented a couple of errors with the Acrobat reader software. We will leave these publications online with the following recommended work-arounds. One problem is with viewing on screen and another is with printing. The problem is not in the file itself, but in the way that Acrobat is dealing with fonts used to create the document. The pre-1995 Stat Briefs use fonts which don't have standard Postscript vector encoding. Acrobat has to deal with these as bit-mapped graphics, and the Reader seems to become overwhelmed at some point as it caches these fonts. The problem occurs after several documents using different fonts are loaded into Acrobat Reader or Exchange. Please exit the Acrobat reader altogether before attempting to read the document you are having trouble with. Then access the document you need, which will start a fresh copy of Acrobat. A related problem in printing the Stat Briefs requires you to select a Print Option which will print bit-mapped or True Type fonts as graphics. Do this if your printed output is garbled.
