The Association of NIST Asian-Pacific
Americans (ANAPA)
ANAPA is a volunteer employee organization within NIST
that is dedicated to:
- promoting the career interests of Asian-Pacific Americans
at NIST,
- providing a network to enhance communication among ANAPA
members, NIST employees, and members of DoC Net and its
sister agencies,
- providing advice and supporting management efforts toward
creating a diverse NIST workforce at all levels,
- promoting recognition of contributions, accomplishments,
and capabilities of NIST Asian-Pacific American
employees,
- fostering aspirations of Asian-Pacific American youths to
pursue careers in science, engineering, and technical
management at NIST, and
- promoting a better understanding of Asian-Pacific
Americans, their heritage and culture and how they have
contributed to the diversity and richness of American
life and society.
To accomplish the above goals, ANAPA sponsors a wide variety
of activities including science lectures, brown-bag lunch
meetings, joint social and educational events with other NIST
employee organizations, and cultural events like Asian arts,
dance, and musical performances for the benefit of NIST employees
and the public. These activities provide opportunities for
informal mentoring, cultural exchange, and networking. Science
lectures and cultural activities are usually held during May --
Asian-Pacific American Heritage month. Previous events included:
- science lectures by Nobel Laureate Dr. Samuel Ting and
Astronaut Dr. Taylor Wang,
- dance and musical performances by Korean dancers from the
Seoul Metropolitan Dance Theater,
- dance and musical performances by artists of Cambodian,
Chinese, Indian, Japanese, and Korean descent,
- presentation and demonstration of Chinese art by artist
and calligrapher Yang Hsien-Min and presentation of
Filipino art by painter, illustrator, and designer Nilo
Santiago
- cosponsoring the first "Taste of China"
festival at the Washington Monument.
- A concert performance "EAST Meets WEST"
by the members of the Opera International, which is led by
Director Mimi Hom, with performers including Hai-bo Bai,

The above painting was
created by renowned Chinese artist and calligraphist, Mr.
Yang Hsien-Min, at NIST on May 12, 1998 during a lecture
and live demonstration of his artwork in celebration of
Asian-Pacific American Heritage month. The Chinese
characters on the lower righthand corner read, from top
down, that the painting is presented to NIST Director Mr.
Raymond Kammer as a memento.
