Tales from the Dark Slide: Highlights of Veterinary Pathology Support in NIAID Research
Pathology is the study of disease. It is the discipline of medicine incorporating gross necropsy and histopathologic findings to elucidate the pathogenesis of disease in humans and animals. The Infectious Disease Pathogenesis Section of the Comparative Medicine Branch of NIAID provides pathology technical support and slide evaluation to any NIAID investigator conducting animal research studies as an adjunct to their current research methodologies. The addition of pathology to any medical research program can provide unique invaluable information and novel findings on disease processes in vivo as well as highlight species differences in the development of appropriate disease models. Specialized methods of pathology include immunohistochemistry, histochemistry, electron microscopy, and other techniques that can reveal gene expression in tissue sections and novel findings not observed with routine histopathology. In addition, digital photomicrography and virtual slide imaging with image analysis are more recent computerized adjuncts to pathology.
