Pathology

PHL pathologists function as scientific collaborators assisting in animal study design, species selection, histopathology and immunohistopathology evaluation, photomicrography, report and manuscript preparation. This is in keeping with NCI-Frederick's research mission.

ANIMAL STUDY DESIGN:

• Review pertinent literature including interpretation of previous pathology data. Advise on mouse modeling/phenotyping, and appropriate controls.

• Recommendations for hematology, blood chemistry , special stains or immunohistochemistry.
• Development of specialized necropsy protocols including choice of fixative(s). Individualized trimming procedures including cost effective selection of target organs.

• Rodent - mouse, rat.
• Other lab animals: fish, frog, non-human primate.

HISTOPATHOLOGICAL EVALUATION:

• Phenotyping of genetically engineered mice (GEM)
• Embryo development
• Tissue microarrays
• Aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and intestinal tumor quantification

• Laser capture microscope (identify proper tissue for excision)
• Review of slides with investigator (double-headed scope or video-camera-scope)

IMMUNO HISTOPATHOLOGY:

• Optimization of antibodies
• Apoptosis
• Cell proliferation
• Angiogenesis
• Hematopoietic neoplasm subclassification

PHOTOMICROGRAPH AND IMAGE ANALYSIS:

• For presentations or manuscripts. Olympus® Vanox microscope equipped with digital and 35 mm film cameras.
• Currently developing investigator-friendly link through the internet.

REPORTS:

• Computerized necropsy/pathology data system with capacity to generate summary incidence reports.
• Email reports directly to investigators.
• Generation of Methods, Pathology tables, Pathology sections for manuscripts.

EXPERTISE:

• Veterinary pathologists board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP).
• Support other NIH institutions
• Participate in MMHCC nomenclature workshops.
• Presentations at national and regional levels.
• Authored or co-authored scientific manuscripts and book chapters.
• Animal Health Surveillance for NCI-Frederick.

INTERACTION:
Interaction is facilitated by our on-site location for NCI-Frederick investigators and the shuttle service between NIH, Bethesda, and Frederick, as well as phone, fax, and electronic mail. PHL’s staff is proactive in developing new techniques, including molecular pathology techniques to support research projects. Our contributions to various research projects are reflected by inclusion as co-authors on numerous scientific manuscripts.
