How to Access the NIH Shared MIF

The following is prepared to help guide the use of the MIF for in vivo diagnostic and molecular imaging studies of research animals. Currently, MIF resource utilization by CCR principal investigators is first come, first served and influenced by assigned allotments and overall MIF utilization. Laboratories will likely begin to incur MIF charges for imaging in FY 2003; currently the only charges would be for unusual resources. If added resources are needed for imaging, i.e. for rederivation, or other, contact Mark Simpson, simpsoma@mail.nih.gov
The initial approval process may take up to six weeks.

Conduct of imaging studies is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator's Research Group. Guidance will be provided by the staff of the facility.

Steps to use the MIF
  1. Obtain CCR or VRP veterinary determination of animal health compliance with MIF policy - currently conventional status with specific agents excluded including coronaviruses, PVM, sendai virus, endoparasites and ectoparasites. Contact your facility veterinarian.
For more information, see: NMRF/MIF - Animal Studies

  2. Prepare or amend animal study proposal for review by the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC).

  3. Prepare MIF Form (NMR Center Proposal for Animal Studies) for submission to MIF.
    The MIF proposal form requires:
    A) CCR emergency clinical veterinary care approval, Dr. John U. Dennis, dennisj@mail.nih.gov
    B) Scientific Director approval send through Mark Simpson, simpsoma@mail.nih.gov, for approval by J. Carl Barrett.

  4. Attend MRI Safety Training, required every 2 years for all investigators using MIF.

  5. For short-term studies (nonsurvival or <5 days duration): housing for the animals will be provided by the MIF. For long-term studies: concurrent with submitting MIF proposal for approval and scheduling by MIF, request animal holding space in CCR animal diagnostic and molecular imaging isolation facility (ADMIIF) in buiding14D.
