Raphidiid Snakeflies
Several species of this family have been found at Florissant. Snakeflies are named for their long, necklike prothorax (area in front of the thorax). This "extension" allows snakeflies to lift their heads above their body, enabling them to strike prey much like a snake . . . thus the name "snakefly."
