CERES/MISR/Terra Coincident Dataset (SSFM)

The Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) and Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) were launched into sun-synchronous polar orbit aboard NASA Terra space-platform on December 18, 1999. Two CERES instruments (FM-1 and FM2) provide radiometric measurements of the Earth's atmosphere from three channels: shortwave and longwave broadband, and narrowband in window region of spectrum. The CERES instruments have 20 km resolution at nadir and scan Earth in three modes: along-track, cross-track and in rotating azimuth mode. CERES Level-2 data product, Single Scanner Footprint (SSF), combines MODIS and CERES measurements over CERES footprint (FOV). MISR measurements are designed to improve our knowledge of the Earth's environment and climate. Viewing the sunlit Earth simultaneously at nine widely-spaced angles, MISR provides radiometrically and geometrically calibrated images in four spectral bands at each of the angles. Spatial sampling of 275 and 1100 meters is provided on a global basis.

The CERES/MISR SSFM dataset integrates measurements from CERES, MODIS and MISR. Level 1B2 MISR radiances (Collection 5 and 6) are convoluted over CERES footprints (SSF Edition-2B) for days with CERES instruments in along-track scanning mode. The SSFM files contain:

        1. CERES FOV Scan sample number;
        2. CERES FOV Packet number;
        3. Number of MISR pixels in CERES FOV;
        4. MISR percent coverage;
        5. Viewing zenith (9 cameras);
        6. Relative azimuth (9 cameras);
        7. Mean of total radiances (4 spectral bands and 9 cameras);
        8. Stddev of total radiances (4 spectral bands and 9 cameras);

The scan and packet numbers are unique for CERES footprint and provide the mean of matching the SSFM and SSF data. In fact, the footprint in SSFM and SSF are arranged with increasing time and already matched, under condition of "daytime" for SSF data (solar zenith angle < 90 deg). Hourly files of CERES/MISR SSFM data product are available for ordering at NASA Langley ASDC (EOS-HDF format, zipped together with corresponding SSF file).

Order in the SSFM arrays:
- Spectral Bands: 446.4 nm (1), 557.5 nm (2) , 671.7 nm (3), and 866.4 nm (4).
- MISR Cameras: DA (1), CA (2), BA (3), AA (4), AN (5), AF (6), BF (7), CF (8), and, DF(9).

NOTE: Viewing zenith angle is assigned negative value if relative azimuth is between 90-270 degrees.
