Press Release

Ambassador Mussomeli  expresses his disappointment with the release of convicted Russian pedophile

Over the last several years Cambodia has shown a serious commitment to combating trafficking in persons.  The Prime Minister, the Ministers of Interior, Justice and Women’s Affairs, as well as numerous other public servants, have shown the world how dedicated the Cambodian government is to protecting its children and other vulnerable citizens.  And the world has applauded Cambodia.  We are deeply disappointed, therefore, with the release of a convicted Russian pedophile after a light sentence was handed down by the Sihanoukville Municipal Court.  This criminal’s release and the punishment administered are not in line with the crime committed.  Harsh sentencing is the most effective way to send a message to pedophiles that these crimes will not be tolerated.  In this case the court has done a great disservice to Cambodia and its people by sending a confused message to those who would abuse the children of this country.  This case threatens to undo the hard work of the Royal Government of Cambodia in its efforts to crack down on abuse and trafficking in persons in the country.

Released July 30, 2008
