in October, 1994 the Sustainable Forestry Initiative program was delivered to the AF&PA Board of Directors -- a standard intended to expand the practice of sustainable forestry throughout the U.S. -- which is built on these five principles. The first and the last principles are the real keys. Meeting the needs of the present without compromising future generations is the core of sustainable forest management. And, continuous improvement is what the SFI program is all about -- the program is designed to promote innovation and to incorporate new ideas in conjunction with the evolution of science and public expectations.
