BGS549

Stock number: BGS549
Locus name: Long glume awn
Locus symbol: Lga

Previous nomenclature and gene symbolization:
Long outer glume = Log (1). Helgason (1) used the gene symbol
log for the short glume awn type, but this symbol is also used for the
elongated outer glume (e) gene (4).
Inheritance:
Monofactorial dominant (1).
Location is unknown.
Description:
In spikelets of plants with the dominant allele (Lga1.a), the (outer)
glume length and width are unaltered, but the glume plus its awn is much longer
than the kernel. Heterozygotes have a glume awn of intermediate length. In
the short glume awn phenotype (lga1.b), the glume and its awn are about
the same length as the kernel. Tsuchiya (4) reported that the glume awn is 4
to 6 mm for the short type and 11 to 13 mm for the long type. Some recessive
alleles at the e locus (BGS057), which are high variable in glume size,
may have glumes phenotypical similar to those associated with the dominant
allele at the Lga locus. However, all e alleles have wider than
normal glumes and show a recessive inheritance pattern.
Origin of mutant:
The short glume awn appears to be the mutant phenotype and is present in many
two-rowed cultivars of Occidental origin.
Mutational events:
lga1.b in Canadian Thorpe (CI??) (2, 3).
Mutant used for description and seed stocks:
lga1.b in Bowman (PI 483237); Lga1.a from Akashinriki (OUJ, PI
467400) mutant OUM113 in Bowman*8 (BGS5701).
