The data provided are representative of the coal beds sampled and were carefully selected to provide a regional view of the overall coal quality. Samples for the Colorado Plateau study are primarily drill core or mine. However, when insufficient data was available to adequately evaluate an individual coal field or to provide a regional view of the quality of the coal field, samples from drill cuttings and outcrops were included. This GIS layer was created from the U.S. Geological Survey's USCHEM database. Samples retrieved are less than 50% ash yield, Cretaceous age, and within the Colorado Plateau study area (Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico). All samples were edited for geological content and updated to reflect new coal bed correlations and formation changes. This data set is therefore a modified subset of the USCHEM database. This data is stored as an ASCII text file (coplateau.txt) and was converted to an ArcView shape file for this project.
