VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT LEGUME GERMPLASM CURATOR/CENTRAL ASIA AND THE CAUCASUS (CAC) PROJECTS COORDINATOR Genetic Resources Unit Organization ICARDA is a non-profit international agricultural research center in a worldwide consortium of 16 centers, supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The CGIAR is co-sponsored by the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The Position ICARDA is seeking a Legume Germplasm Curator/CAC Projects
Coordinator to join its Genetic Resources Unit. The successful
candidate will be based at ICARDA's headquarters in Aleppo, Syria, and
will be reporting directly to the head of Genetic Resources Unit (GRU)
carrying out the following reponsibilities: * Collect, assemble and
introduce new genetic resources of food and forage legumes and their
wild relatives into the ICARDA mandated germplasm collection.
* Multiply and whenever necessary, regenerate accessions to reach the prescribed standards. * Characterize, preliminary evaluate and document all new germplasm of food and forage legumes and their wild relatives. * Analyze the passport and evaluation data and publish the results in scientific papers, reports and catalogs. * Collaborate with ICARDA and NARS scientists and advanced institutions in the introduction and use of advanced technologies in genetic resource collections, conservation and characterization, such as molecular tools and GIS. * Develop project proposals to attract support from donors to expand research and capacity development activities in Central Asia and the Caucasus (CAC) to collect conserve and utilize plant genetic resources in the area. * Coordinate and implement projects in CAC to collect,conserve, document and utilize plant genetic resources in the area. * Supervise support staff assigned to work in food and forage legume germplasm at GRU. * Coordinate collaborative plant genetic resource activities with the Vavilov Institute (VIR) of Russia. * Participate in the GRU training activities. Qualifications and Experience The successful candidate will have an earned Ph.D. in
agriculture, agricultural botany or plant genetics with a background in
statistics and an interest in genetic resource conservation and
utilization activities. Also, he/she should have the following: * At least 5 years research
experience in agronomy or genetic resources or agricultural ecology.
* Must have previous experience in working with legumes. * Proven track record of writing research proposals and attracting funding. * Proven track record of project management and coordination. * Must have experience in working in developing countries. * Experience in working in Central Asia and the Caucasus highly desirable. * Candidate should have the capacity to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and multinational team. * Fluency in spoken and written English is essential. * Good publication records advantageous. * Knowledge of Arabic and Russian would be an advantage. Terms of Appointment The appointment will be for an initial period of three years, renewable thereafter on an annual basis. The salary is paid in US dollars.
