Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) is a municipal utility that is an enterprise of the City of Gainesville, Florida. GRU is currently constructing the GRU South Energy Center to serve the new Shands Hospital South Campus Expansion. The energy center will provide normal and essential electric power, steam, chilled water, medical gas infrastructure, and backup potable water well. The GRU South Energy Center will employ CHP to optimize the use of energy and ensure a more reliable source of power to the campus. The CHP system being installed consists of a gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator, and steam turbine chiller. The gas turbine will operate in parallel with the local GRU electric distribution grid and excess power will be purchased by GRU.
