On August 23, 1992 Barbara and Stanley Goldenberg's first daughter (and fourth child), Pearl, was born. Stan then rushed home from the hospital in order to complete preparations on his home before Hurricane Andrew struck. He rode out that terrible night with his three sons, his sister-in-law's family, and a new kitten.

First the plywood panels covering the windows were torn off by the wind, then wind-borne debris shattered the vulnerable windows. They were all huddling in the kitchen when the roof blew away and the walls began to collapse. Stan rode out the highest winds pinned by the stove protecting his sons.

The family was rescued by a neighbor who saw their plight and offered them refuge at his home.
Stan's interest in hurricane shutters and disaster preparedness was greatly increased from his experience in Hurricane Andrew. The family's dramatic survival story has been featured on many news documentaries, and Stan has given many interviews to television and newspapers about that night and talks about preparedness at public meetings and conferences.
