Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains the geologic units that have any portion within the Rio Puerco watershed. The boundary lines of some units extend outside of the basin perimeter. The portions of the boundaries outside of the basin are bounded by a rectangle with a geographic extent of approximately 20km beyond the farthest north, south, east and west points of the basin perimeter.

Description of Parent Data Set: This geologic map was prepared as part of a study of digital methods and techniques as applied to complex geologic maps. The geologic map was digitized in GSMAP version 8 (Selner and Taylor, 1992) at Socorro, New Mexico, by Orin Anderson and Glen Jones and published as the Geologic Map of New Mexico 1:500,000 (Anderson and Jones, 1994) in GSMAP format. The vector line work and polygon point labels were converted to ARC/INFO format on a DOS based PC with GSMARC (Green and Selner,1988). These data were transferred to a Data General UNIX system and loaded into ARC/INFO. Each vector and polygon was given attributes derived from the original 1994 GSMAP geologic map. Both digital versions are at 1:500,000 scale using the Lambert Conformal Conic map projection parameters of the State base map.

Purpose:
This data set was created to digitally represent the geology of the Rio Puerco basin.

Intended use of data: These data are typically used as base data for other coverages, and should be used at scales of 1:500,000 and smaller. The data are intended for use as a general reference to the extent and boundaries of geologic units in the Rio Puerco basin.

Supplemental_Information:
Data completeness reflect the content of the source graphic. Only the geologic features were extracted from the source graphic.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Attribute accuracy for this data set is assumed to be 100%.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Attributes and processing steps were consistent for the entire data set.
Completeness_Report:
Data completeness for unrevised digital files reflects the content of the source graphic. Features may have been eliminated or generalized on the source graphic, due to scale and legibility constraints.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Accuracy of these digital data (if not digitally revised), is based upon the use of source graphics which are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards. NMAS horizontal accuracy requires that at least 90 percent of points tested are within 1/50th of an inch of the true position. Comparison to the graphic source is used as control to asses digital positional accuracy. Cartographic offsets may be present on the graphic source, due to scale and legibilty constraints. For more information on National Map Accuracy Standards, refer to USGS Fact Sheet FS-078-96 (September 1997), or visit <URL:http://mapping.usgs.gov/mac/isb/pubs/factsheets/fs07896.html>.

Process_Description:
The data set was downloaded from the online source (Green 1997) onto a Sun Unix server, where it was processed with ARC/INFO 7.1.1. The data set was clipped with a rectangle that had a geographic extent of approximately 20km beyond the farthest north, south, east and west points of the basin perimeter, and reprojected from the Lambert Conformal Conic projection into Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates.

For the shapefile versions of this data set, faults and dikes were selected in ArcEdit and written to a new, separate coverage. Then, the dissolve operation was performed on the [geologic unit] polygons to join polygons of like formations that were split apart by faults and/or dikes. This operation created a coverage that contains ONLY the geologic unit polygons.
