The Northern Plains Agricultural Research Laboratory presents an range of noteworthy and fascinating vocations as well as temporary employment for students and post-docs.

NPARL is located in a family-friendly rural area and is approximately 50 miles from two community colleges: Williston State College, Williston, ND and Dawson Community College, Glendive, MT. $48,148-$57,709 annual

 

Description of Duties:

 

The position, located at the Northern Plains Agricultural Research Laboratory, Agricultural Systems Research Unit (ASRU), in Sidney, Montana, is part of the national ARS program on integrated cropping systems. The objective of this research is to develop and refine procedures for assessing and mapping crop residue cover, soil tillage intensity, and conservation practices at a range of spatial and temporal scales across semi-arid landscapes in order to identify and evaluate sustainable crop production systems. The successful applicant will conduct and report research in dryland and irrigated cropping systems on techniques and methodologies for assessing the spatial and temporal variability of crop residue cover under cropping systems utilizing remote sensing and other methods for assessing residue cover, soil tillage intensity, and conservation practices.

Qualification Requirements: Recent Ph.D. in agricultural engineering, plant physiology, agronomy, or related field is required. Knowledge of modern farming practices, cropping systems, and soil science is required. Training in microclimate measurement techniques, remote sensing, and statistics is highly desirable, and skill in operation of computers and field instrumentation including dataloggers will be useful. Ability to work across disciplines as a team member is expected.
