Kenai Peninsula Partnership Builds Disaster Resistance

Anchorage, Alaska -- On Wednesday, July 7, 1999 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director James L. Witt will welcome Kenai Peninsula Borough as the newest full-fledged member of Project Impact: building disaster-resistant communities, a national initiative designed to change the way America deals with disasters. Project Impact is all about forging stakeholder partnerships, prioritizing hazards, pooling resources and taking action to reduce the effects of future natural disasters, and according to Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Mike Navarre, it's a perfect fit for local mitigation initiatives.
"The concept of taking action before disaster strikes was not a hard sell in Kenai Peninsula Borough," said Navarre. "From the 1964 earthquake that hammered our coastal communities to the ever-present threat of wildfire, we've learned the value of pre-disaster mitigation."
Director Witt, Senator Stevens, Governor Knowles and Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Mike Navarre will join area business, local agency and organization representatives for the official Project Impact Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony at 1:00 p.m., at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center in Kenai.
