Entitled Sanctuary Currents '96: "Building Community Connections in Science, Education and Conservation", the symposium will feature talks about the marine sanctuary by marine researchers, educators and conservationists. On Friday evening, the Sanctuary Reflections Awards presentation and reception will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. at the LaNovia Room at Herrmann Hall. The Sanctuary Reflections Awards honor individuals and groups for their past efforts towards the designation of the Monterey Bay as a national marine sanctuary and for their continued involvement in the conservation and preservation of the Sanctuary. Award recipients include: « Special Recognition: Congressman Sam Farr, California 17th District « Research: Deborah Johnston, California Department of Fish and Game « Education: Dorris Welch: Education Director, Long Marine Laboratory « Conservation: Les Strnad, California Coastal Commission « Organization: Surfrider Foundation - Santa Cruz Chapter « Citizen - First year graduating classes of the Save Our Shore's Sanctuary Stewards Program and the Center for Marine Conservation and Friends of the Sea Otter BAYNET Program From 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. the Annual Ed Ricketts Memorial Lecture will feature Dr. Steven Webster, Education Director from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Mr. Webster will be honored as this year's recipient of the Edward Ricketts Memorial Award. Mr. Webster will be presenting a lecture entitled "Ed Ricketts: Where Are You When We Need You?" The lecture will be held in the Glasgow Auditorium at the Naval Postgraduate School Campus. On Saturday, March 9, at Glasgow Hall at the Naval Postgraduate School the symposium will be held from 9:00 - 4:30 p.m. Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. at the door. There is no charge to attend the symposium. The morning program (9:00 - 9:30) will feature Mr. Mike Weber, co-author of The Wealth of Oceans, on the topic "Beyond Monterey Bay and Our Splendid Isolation". From 9:30 - Noon a presentation entitled "Patterns, Processes, and People: A Characterization of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary" will be held. Concurrent afternoon sessions to be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. include: « Education Workshops focusing on hands-on K-12 marine science activities and curricula, water quality testing, and marine science resources on the World Wide Web « Marine Research Symposium featuring noted marine researchers and the latest in computer visualization of marine research and data. Topics include ocean circulation, ecology of large whales in Mexico and Monterey, and a fly through model for visualizing Monterey Bay spatial data. « Conservation panel entitled "Challenges and Opportunities in Ocean Conservation - Policies, Politics, and Citizen Action". Speakers will include staff from the offices of Representatives Sam Farr and Anna Eshoo, Gary Patton, General Counsel for the Planning and Conservation League, and Dave Dickson, Director of Constituency Development for the Center for Marine Conservation.
