Summary
This experiment began in 1963 at a site that has the following climatic conditions: Minimum annual temperature of 4.1 deg C, Mean annual temperature of 8.5 deg C, Maximum annual temperature of 12.5 deg C, and Mean annual rainfall of 435 mm. The soil is described as an Agrudalf. By FAO-Unesco soil map: Podzoluvisol. The experimental land use has been: ... crop rotation 1963-74 maize, winter rye, potato, winter wheat; 1975-82 sugar beet, spring barley; 1983-94 potato, winter wheat, sugar beet, spring barley. Treatments unfertilized; organic manures - 2 levels of FYM or straw; 5 levels of N; before 1983 also irrigation. The measurements made, methodology, and frequency are listed below: a) Vegetation measurements made and frequency Yield: Yearly Total above-ground dry matter: Yearly Total dry matter offtake: Yearly Nitrogen content of offtake: Yearly Yearly: N, K, P, Mg. b) Soil sampling Time zero soil measurements taken. 0-25 cm: Ct, sample not kept. Details of soil sampling method: Auger, 10-15 cores/plot, distributed over the plot. Soil is separated into layers: 0-25,25-50 cm c) Soil measurements made and frequency Total carbon: Every second year Method of measuring total carbon: Dry combustion Biomass carbon: Irregular Method of measuring biomass carbon: Dry combustion Total nitrogen: Every second year Method of measuring total nitrogen: Kjeldahl, from 1995: dry combustion Total mineral nitrogen: Irregular Method of measuring total mineral nitrogen: KCl extraction, colorimetrically Nitrate nitrogen: Irregular Method of measuring nitrate nitrogen: KCl extraction, colorimetrically Ammonium nitrogen: Irregular Method of measuring ammonium nitrogen: KCl extraction, colorimetrically Soil bulk density or weight: 1976, 1992 Method of measuring soil bulk density or weight: Ring tube method/core sampling Other nutrients: Every second year: C,N,P,K,Mg,pH. 1973,78,84 micronutrients. Atmospheric inputs: mineral nitrogen. Mar-May 10.4; Jun-Aug 17.4; Sep-Nov 4.8; Dec-Feb 2.6. kg/ha (atmospheric inputs) d) Details of the meteorological station Nearest meteorological station to the site: Muencheberg which is .1 km from the site at coordinates 14deg7min E, 52deg31min N. The meteorological station is manual. e) Meteorological data available and frequency Rainfall: Daily Air temperature: Daily Soil temperature: Daily at 5, 10, 20 and 50 cm depth Wind speed: Continuous Net Radiation: Daily Sun hours: Continuous Relative humidity: Daily This information was compiled for the GCTE-SOMNET Database, Pete Smith, Pete Falloon, David Powlson, and Jo Smith. Details of homogeneity of the plots: Soil texture: band of coarser soil running SW-NE across centre of experimental area. b) Details of replication, randomization and controls There are at least 8 replicates in the experiment. The experiment has a randomized plot design. See Smukalski, M et al. (1990). There are control plots described as follows: Unfertilized plots since 1962.
