XVe | sensory system d-out qh |
SN | The structures of the individual sensory systems are complex, making classification difficult. Each sensory system (the visual system, the auditory system, etc.) consists of a sense organ and a nerve system. A sense organ is a structure that contains sensory receptors; external sense organ parts often channel external stimuli to these receptors, transforming the stimuli in the process. The sensory receptors are also the entry part of the specialized sensory (visual, auditory, etc.) nerve system. The receptors process the outside stimuli and produce signals that they transmit to the sensory pathway, which in turn carries the signals to the sensory cortex, where final processing takes place. This organization gives rise to a dual classification. The classification by individual sensory system is chosen as the primary classification. Each individual sensory system is subdivided in the same way; first the sense organ (e.g., *+XV6.2 eye* qh ah), then the sensory nervous system (e.g., *+XV6.6 visual nerve system* qh ah). In a secondary classification, *+XV2 sense organ* qh ah assembles through cross-references all individual sense organs, and *+XV4 sensory nervous system* qh ah all the individual systems. The sensory receptors and sensory nerves are part of the peripheral nervous system. | |
