Quick Bibliography SeriesBibliographies in the Quick Bibliography Series of the
National Agricultural Library, are intended primarily for
current awareness, and as the title of the series implies, are
not indepth exhaustive bibliographies on any given subject.
However, the citations are a substantial resource for recent
investigations on a given topic. They also serve the purpose
of bringing the literature of agriculture to the interested
user who, in many cases, could not access it by any other
means. The bibliographies are derived from computerized on-
line searches of the AGRICOLA data base. Timeliness of topic
and evidence of extensive interest are the selection criteria.

The author/searcher determines the purpose, length, and search
strategy of the Quick Bibliography. Information regarding
these is available upon request from the author/searcher.

Copies of this bibliography may be made or used for
distribution without prior approval. The inclusion or
omission of a particular publication or citation may not be
 construed as endorsement or disapproval.

To request a copy of a bibliography in this series, send the

Abstract: DNA was isolated from clover proliferation (CP)
 mycoplasmalike organism (MLO)-diseased periwinkle plants
(Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don.) and cloned into pSP6
plasmid vectors. CP MLO-specific recombinant DNA clones were
biotin labeled and used as probes in dot hybridization and
restriction fragment length polymorphism analyses to study the
genetic interrelatedness among CP MLO and other MLOs,
including potato witches'-broom (PWB) MLO. Results from dot
hybridization analyses indicated that both a Maryland strain
of aster yellows and a California strain of aster yellows are
distantly related to CP MLO. Elm yellows, paulownia witches'-
broom, peanut witches'-broom, loofah witches'-broom, and sweet
potato witches'-broom may be very distantly related, if at
all, to CP MLO. A new Jersey strain of aster yellows MLO,
tomato big bud MLO, clover phyllody MLO, beet leafhopper-
transmitted virescence MLO, and ash yellows MLO are related to
CP MLO, but PWB MLO is the most closely related. Similarity
coefficients derived from restriction fragment length
polymorphism analyses revealed that PWB and CP MLOs are
closely related strains and thus provided direct evidence of
their relatedness in contrast to reliance solely on biological
 characterization.

Abstract: Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis was used to
study the mode of inheritance of isozyme phenotypes of six
enzyme systems (GOT, IDH, LAP, MDH, PGI, and SKDH) of
Paulownia taiwaniana Hu & Chang. The investigation of single-
tree progeny rendered possible an unconventional method of
gene locus identification based on the uniform heterozygous
state of P. taiwaniana at all studied polymorphic gene loci.
This can be explained by the supposed hybrid origin of P.
taiwaniana, its subsequent exclusively vegetative propagation,
and the genetic impoverishment of its supposed ancestors, P.
fortunei Hemsl. and P. kawakamii Ito. Seven polymorphic gene
loci were identified; six monomorphic zones were assumed to be
controlled by fixed gene loci. The results support the idea of
a hybrid origin of P. taiwaniana.

Abstract: Lumber sawn from 10- to 14-year-old paulownia
(Paulownia tomentosa) trees was studied to determine quality
after air-drying as indicated by defect development and air-
drying rate. It was found that this naturalized species dries
easily and rapidly without serious drying defects. Commencing
May 20 in eastern Kentucky, the drying time from green to 20
percent moisture content (MC) was 39 days, or 3.5 percent MC
loss per day. Paulownia is dimensionally stable with an
average volumetric shrinkage (green to ovendry) of 5.9
percent, a value lower than any native, commercial hardwood.
Lumber was primarily flatsawn to maximize defect development
during drying. End splitting was the major drying defect and
was commonly associated with pith that was large (average =
0.41 in.) compared to native hardwoods. Occurrence of bow,
crook, twist, and cup after drying was low compared to that
reported for other fast-drying species. Paulownia is
dimensionally stable and concern about drying defects,
regardless of growth ring orientation, is not necessary in
air-drying, unless the pith is present.
